studentsclearly wellprepared for the confrontation put them through their paces Principally under fire was Progressive Con servative Incumbent Bill Hodgson who had to refute charges that the June election is un necessary and to defend his governments policies on job creation farmland development and education Criticism of the election call was made both by the 200 senior the Conservatives V BILL HODGSON well and by Liberal candidate Liberals Wilson and New ahead of both the Liberals Democratic Party hopeful Ian Scott Students charged that the estimated million spent on the election could be better spent on programs The and Mr Hodgson an swered the charges by saying that had either party been interested in preserving minority tob creation government they would I nave supported the that school board level He responded that while some money must cer tainly be spent for education it should go into special needs classes than into unnecessary packing He added that his parly wanted to see a return to the basics in education Unemployment a- mong the young was the main concern of the student questioners and none of the candidates appeared to allay their fears about lack of jobs Mr Hodgson defended the govern ments make work programs and outlined an additional program by which the government makes available a sub sidy of one dollar an hour toward a students wage Mr Wilson suggested that jobs might be created through a home- insulation program which would also cut energy consumption Mr Scott suggested that incentive be given to employers to stimulate job creation Following the session during which students applauded the giveandtake of the debate as much as the answers themselves the group gathered in the school cafeteria for a meet the candidates session NDP last week He was responding to earlier criticism of the Conservative agri cultural policy by NOP challenger Ian Scott The reelection of the Conservative government would continue the steep decline in Ontarios food production capability Mr Scott charged in a press release Theres no food shortage responded Mr Hodgson Nor is there a shortage of farmland he added but rather a shortage of people willing to farm the land To encourage far mers said Mr Hodgson the government has aided them through grants and tax exemptions Farmers are com pensated for per cent of their total property tax Election best thing Hodgson NEWMARKET The Ontario government was not functioning smoothly York North PC candidate Bill Hodgson said in a press release Monday justifying the need for the current election The ridings MPP since 1067 he said he thinks the election is the best thing that has happened for Ontario We tried to work with them the opposition but they were determined not to make minority government work he said Mr Hodgson said the issue in the June election Ontario needs a strong government to deal with economic problems and those of Confederation Those who believe the NDP can accomplish what has to be done by a strong Ontario government should have sat with me in the past 18 months to see how they operate Mr Hodgson termed the recent minority government the most difficult he has ever experienced and said it makes me laugh when I hear the stories from opposition candidates saying an election wasnt needed he noted receive lax exemptions on farm equipment and secure grants for water supply projects and farm buildings Mr Scott said that development pressures have forced farmers to sell their property Residents in York North can see this all around said the NOP candidate We all know farmers who have been forced to sell once development pressure made their business uneconomical Mr Hodgson stressed the NDP isnt looking realistically at development The NDP is hollering for more houses he noted Houses must be built adjacent to urban areas where services are available explained Mr Hodgson Rather speak directly on the question of farmlands Liberal candidate Jim Wilson has said that York North must have a strong voice in speaking out against creeping development from Metro Toronto He added that he must first be elected and will then plunge into an analysis of issues Mr Scott said the farmland issue is crucial After 34 years of Tory government this province must now im port beef pork poultry and dairy products to meet its demand he said The countrys bread basket is fragile and we cannot rely on it too heavily we must maintain our industry My party is dedicated to stopping the loss of farmland and insuring we will have food for our
