J i ffev By ANNE NEWMARKET Despite fears that the Newmarket court house slated for construction beginning next month will be too small to handle even the current case load let alone an in creasing number in future years the outlook looks bright for the administration of justice in York Region Some lawyers attending the York North Law Association r Chief Justices Night in Aurora last Wednesday admitted hearing reports that the court house may be too small for even present needs One noting that the proposed facility can be ex panded said even a small new facility would be better than the present courthouse Pressing for facilities beyond those proposed could a in ion result in a lengthy delay plans are redesigned he warned But The Era has viewed plans that show that the new larger than first anticipated Four rooms for provincial court hearings are planned court two for county court and one for supreme court In addition the million solarheated building will house a regional registry office probation facilities and quarters for justices of the peace Waiting rooms will be available for persons attending courts while defence counsels and judges will all have separate quarters In the family court section of the building space will be available to accommodate children awaiting hearings Family court staff will be housed on a separate floor to facilitate greater efficiency The NEWMARKET York Region will not grow nearly as fast over the next 25 years as its planners have predicted a new housing study indicates In fact said the report York Region may soon be in com petition with surrounding municipalities for new residential growth although it is not likely to have much trouble achieving its projected target population of 500000 by the year 2001 The region now has about 201000 people Until now most planners and politicians in the area had assumed the rush for new housing which all regional municipalities in York have been experiencing in recent years would continue as the pattern of growth into the foreseeable future Yorks housing growth has been ex ceeding the provincial average for 20 years and its housing stock increased by onethird in the last five years alone They saw Yorks biggest problem not as one of obtaining enough growth to maintain its targets but of limiting growth through restrictions on sewer and water services However a York Housing Study NEWMARKET Regional and municipal officials may be given a chance to clear their names in the judicial inquiry into events surrounding ap proval of landfill permits in Maple Premier William Davis called the inquiry last week in response to charges that Disposal Services Ltd gave a donation to the provin cial Progressive Conservatives in an attempt to win approval of two landfillpermit applications in Maple York regional councillors took exception Thursday to news reports quoting Norman Goodhead former president of Disposal Services as saying the company had previously given about a year to in dividual municipal and provincial candidates King Township Mayor Margaret Brltnell who steered the motion through regional council asked that Premier Davis expand the terms of reference to week Only threequarters of one per cent of provincial spending is devoted to the courts less than any other budget area a meeting of the York North Law Association was told While the Supreme Court is
