Era Newmarket A i OTTAWA REPORT By Sinclair Stevens MP a of the Magnificent Seven met to Li their economic It ACT cad thai all concentrate in getting their down This is certainly food newt for Canada which per cstfmt has the level off any of the countries I Friday evening the Bank of Canada took a further welcome step to loosen up system by towering their bank rate to per cent was followed Monday ironing fay our major chartered banks lowering their prime rate to per cent Historically this should mean a more vibrant economy and more jobs in Canada which are certainly needed The has postponed the tabling of their Annual Review In the United States however the Internationa Economic Report of the president was transmitted to the Congress last This report gives International figures inducing those for Canada which are just not available here our real growth was per cent compared to per cent in the United States Our consumer prices went up per cent last year compared to per cent in the United States which has no control As the smallest of the seven big in dustrialized nations attending the meeting and the only one which a net exporter of raw materials one would expect Canadas portion to be one of the best instead of one of the worst in the western Unfortunately internationally we have been faring poorly Our current account trade balance was billion in deficit last year as it was the year before compared to the United States which for the two year had a total surplus of billion Put another way at billion we lost almost as much in the two years as the United States gained and yet we are about one- tenth the size of the US Even the United Kingdom had a deficit less than ours in the past two years The United States figures make it clear that we are continuing to lose our productivity in relation to other countries Trends in unit labor costs for rnanufacturing tell the story In our costs went up per cent while in the United States they fell one per cent In fact we are the only country of the seven to have an increase in such costs All of the other countries had a fall in costs In West Germany for example unit labor costs fell per cent Last year in Canada we paid our workers in manufacturing per hour while the United Slates paid yet we had controls and of course the United States did not That is a dif ference of cents per hour The year before there was a difference of only nine cents per hour In the rate in the United States was while we were at a level of Then we were cents below the average rate in the United States now we are 49 cents above the United States wage level in manufacturing In textiles our workers are now paid 530 compared to the United States where they are paid in footwear our level is 455 and the United States level is Speaking generally in the United States last year productivity went up 84 per cent while ours went up 3S per cent Ours was one of the worst increases of any industrialized nation Perhaps the most amazing aspect of our relatively poor performance is that among the nations compared we in Canada produce almost as much oil as we consume The United States on the other hand consumes 86 million barrels a day more than it produces Western Europe is a net consumer of 13 million barrels per day and Japan uses up over 5 million barrels per day as it has virtually no oil resources With such a favored position in the world as the only western industrialized nation that is relatively selfsufficient in oil it Is difficult to understand why we should have the highest level of unemployment one of the lowest levels of productivity gain and one of the highest levels of inflation It is to be hoped that the government will shift its emphasis in the coming months from their obsession with the redistribution of income to the creation of income including jobs for Canadians ies league fund drive nears NEWMARKET Newmarket League fund to raise as the leagues on cost of Installing lights at a
