WERE GODS HHSS English class publish science NEWMARKET Its story of how men came to know that there really are gods While journeying to Mars a man chances across a spaceship and finds inside an Old Man whose Job it is to collect the deads souls for for redistribution The Old Man is later able to convince the world that gods do in fact exist That tale or rather its expanded and embellished form was written by John Cun ningham a Grade student at Huron Heights Secondary Stnool The story together with 27 other science fiction tales was released this week by one of the schools English classes as the second of teacher Bob Thompklns publishing efforts Cassandra as the books title is a class project of the 50 students studying science Action literature with Mr The 48page book contains illustrations also done by students In the class Stories were written and submitted at Christmas and those appearing in the book were selected by Mr They deal with future situations In a literary way rather man the strict scientific and technological themes of most science fiction By CHRISTINA MONTGOMERY Reporter Formed out of head is the way John Cunningham who Illustrated the books cover describes the work Prying the stories out of the students most of whom their teacher describes as fairly talented was easy After the two years ago when the first Cassandra was published the books assemblers found production simpler than ex pected Getting the books to the eager public is another story One thousand copies have been published at a cost of some of which was raised through advertising and some of which was donated by the schools student union and the Huron English department Arrangements for bookstore sales have been difficult Dealers have wanted as much as per cent of the price Copies will sell at the school for one dollar but at a higher price In retail outlets if no better arrangements can be made with dealers The students have been counting on support from local merchants in supplying shelf space for the books sales in return for the business they have given the towns stores A poster campaign advertising the book begins this week in the school where books will be available until local outlets are found Aside from the sales which are hoped will cover printing costs Mr expects that the books publication has given or- couragement to those of his students interested in writing Because as John Cunningham explains it its the pride not the money WN
