NDP Li hopefuls By BOB MARTIN Era News Editor NEWMARKET The quiet campaign has ended With Thursdays announcement by Premier William Davis that York North voters will be joining the provincewide trek to the polls June 9 the two challengers hoping to unseat veteran incumbent Progressive Conservative MPP Bill Hodgson are ready to launch their campaigns in earnest Not that Liberal hopeful Jim Wilson and New Democratic Party standardbearer Ian Scott have been in hiding its just that theyll both take on a new public profile during the next five weeks Librarian at Huron Heights Secondary School here Mr Scott has subtly maintained that profile since winning the NDP nomination almost a year ago Hes conducted a letters to the editor campaign on various local and provincial issues Now that the election has been called both he and Mr Wilson a Newmarketbased pharmaceutical salesman can air their views during public election debates Prior to Thursdays action at Queens Park both men were busy laying he groundwork for a campaign that has now been in progress almost a week Mr Wilson who was uncontested for the Feb 23 nomination coordinated his efforts with the Liberal riding association dividing York North into campaign divisions Campaign finance and office chairmen have already been selected and signs are prepared Im ready to go Mr Wilson declared Saturday What Ive done is left the nuts and bolts to the organizers If they tell me to be somewhere Til be there Its a far cry from the municipal election campaign when Mr Wilson ran unsuccessfully for the Newmarket seat on the York Region separate school board In that campaign he personally directed all operations While he was defeated by incumbent Kathleen Taylor the campaign gave him experience that Mr Wilson said will benefit him during the provincial outing But there are also some differences While he could manage his entire municipal campaign its a different story during the coming five weeks If a person tried to be a candidate a campaign chairman and a financial chairman he just couldnt do it he explained In the early part of the year since his nomination Mr Scott has concentrated on signing up new members for the provincial NDP riding association and renewing old mem berships The effort he explained Friday gave him a chance to meet party supporters and gave party members an op portunity to know and understand him In addition to his letterwriting campaign Mr Scott has maintained public contact with cable television shows in Aurora and Newmarket and by attending last weeks mini- cabinet session in Newmarket Hes also been on hand for meetings over several con troversial development proposals in Vaughan in the southern corner of the riding Although the June election date hadnt been confirmed during his Era interview Friday Mr Scott said Thats what our preparations are heading towards Ive felt for the last two or three weeks that was the date Like Mr Wilson the NDP candidate has his campaign finance sign and area chairman selected One leaflet is at the printers while the material for election signs is ready Were reasonably well prepared explained Mr Scott While the has had its candidate active in the quiet campaign for almost a year Mr Wilson entered the race after King Township Mayor Margaret Britnell opted out of the provincial race in favor of local politics Mrs Britnell still attended the Wilson nomination session after she declared herself out of the race however Her loss as a candidate isnt expected to be a major blow Mr Wilson stressed Its a combination of the old and new he explained Ive got a new organization Im not relying on her resour ces His respect for the King mayor is evident however when he noted that had she wanted the nomination he would not have opposed her President of the riding association when Mrs vacated the nomination Mr Wilson denied he ran merely because there was no one to fill the post I ran because I wanted to run he emphasized Both Mr Scott and Mr Wilson see issues in the York North campaign closely paralleling provincial issues When youre running for the provincial government you do tend to follow the party line explained Mr Wilson Some of the local issues involve provincial see QUIET page nomination Resources Transportation Committee on the Legislature Regulations Committee and as chairman of the Advisory Committee Mr Hodgson sees few major local issues surfacing during the upcoming cam paign Most of the major issues of past campaigns have been resolved he says pointing out that construction of Highway is underway York County
