assist the Society in its work which should help create a valuable historical resource in the township for use by local residents students researchers and tourists A fourth project is being funded for the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled This volunteer group is now working with handicapped children and adults who are interested in horseback riding A principal in the application Edward Reed has been active for about four years in this en deavour The group rents facilities at Farm on the line north of Stouffville Their grant toals These projects came out of the first phase of the program for this year and applications for grants had to be made prior to Feb Phase one projects must start operations between April and Aug 22 and the work should be finished by March 31st next year A second phase will come up later in the year with applications being due no later than Aug 26 Any established organization partnership or corporation may present an application Emphasis is being placed on sponsorship by recongnized and established organizations rather than on individuals as in the past Local Initiatives Program If you would like to par ticipate in future in the Canada Works Program please be sure you have your application in before the Aug 26 deadline In the meantime I extend my best wishes to those groups that have received grant approvals for the success of their projects and hope they will in a small way at least relieve some of the current unemployment in this area It is not often that a couple are able to celebrate their sixtyfifth wedding anniversary but last Sunday Mr and Mrs Ellis Staden did just that at the Newmarket Nursing Home The couple were married on a Wednesday at Buxton Derbyshire in the midlands of England and they sailed for Canada the following Friday years ago They have not been back since Kate Staden is now years young while her husband Ellis is and I were pleased to join members of their family and friends at the celebration and offer our congratulations The day before we were privileged to Join in a ninetyninth birthday party and twofiftieth wedding anniversary celebrations The birthday party was in the Aurora United Church where over people gathered to say Happy Birthday to Annie Woods who has been a stalwart in this community all her life Mr and Mrs Orland Elford celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the Free Methodist Church Queen St Newmarket Mrs came originally from Sutton while her husband was from Just down the road at the Church of the Mr and Mrs Arthur celebrated their fiftieth wedding released recently by the Ontario environment ministry is to ensure Metro Toronto access to disposal sites in York and neighboring regions Toronto generates nearly two million tons of waste per year com pared to tons annually in York Region the report states Currently Toronto garbage is dumped in private sites in York Region and in Durham Region Peel does not accept Metro garbage A major recom mendation of the report is that the provincial government exercise its authority to ensure that Metro Toronto has access to landfill sites outside its boundaries Representatives stressed the report is also concerned with developing alternatives to landfill such as recovery and recycling To date the province has withheld taking a stand regarding aste management The ministry urges however that regions call for legislation to permit them to undertake the management of landfill sites York has already taken steps to amend the Region of York Act What you really want is facilities for waste disposal for Metro Toronto somewhere outside Toronto commented Councillor Howard Shillington of Township He complained local municipalities would have no control over the location and operation of
