workers in York Region have tailed Following six meetings dating back to June an inter agency steering com mittee has abandoned efforts to form a region- wide association chairman Dick Mullen said here last week There wasnt enough interest in York Region at this time the Childrens Aid Society program and personnel coordinator explained Or the halfdozen sessions called to form the professional association several featured keynote speakers designed to draw a potential mem bership estimated at When writer June addressed the most recent session earlier this month in Richmond Hill people turned up Less than half remained for the business of the meeting Mr Mullen noted There were there for June he explained When it came time to make decisions we had One of the key aims of the proposed association was to have been to provide communication among all community and social service agencies in the region Orga attributed at least part of the failure of the plan to the fact announcements of the meetings reached the heads of invited agencies but were not always circulated to the workers In a paradoxical way the failure of the group points up the need for it noted Mr Mullen Its death is its own justification The four member steering committee consisting of Mr Mullen Robertson of Childrens Aid David Burns of York Central Hospitals Mental Health Clinic and Jack Oosterveer of the Ministry of Correctional Services praised the efforts of Seneca Colleges King Campus in attempting to assist organization of the association The college with its strong emphasis on community awareness and involvement was a constant supporter of all six sessions explained Mr Mullen Frankly York is bloody lucky to have them the committee chairman said of Senecas involvement As an alternative to a regionwide association the steering committee is encouraging workers to organize on a community level and asking the regions health and social department to publish an ongoing region- wide newsletter for community workers Both the community organizations and the now defunct regional group were not conceived as lobby organizations for the workers Mr Mullen stressed It never even got that sophisticated he noted Were hardly a political threat Coline Gardhouse recently received her Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto She is the daughter of Mrs Gardhoose and the late Arnold J Gardhouse of Sharon A past president of the Toronto Secondary School Teachers Federation she is presently teaching history at Collegiate In Toronto the room This strange performance has been
