Era Oat Wed Mirth 1 55 attend Cub Scout Albert banquet By Viola MOUNT ALBERT This has been a week of banquets and special presentations in the village The Mount Albert Cubs and Scouts held their annual father and son banquet last Thurs day in the Mount Albert Community Centre- One hundred and fiftyfive boys and dads attended the banquet at which special tribute was made to the movements founder Lord Baden- Taking part in the evenings activity were Cub Greg who returned thanks Scout David Jenson gave a toast to Lord Baden- Powell and David Rae introduced the assistant district commissioner for south Lake Simcoe region Glenn Chantler of Bradford Guest speaker Dr was in troduced by Greg Clark Dr briefly told the boys how his duties as school trustee affect them and then spoke to the toys on his involvement with the Scout movement in England The evenings en tertainment was rounded out by several skits presented by members of the Cub Pack During the evening presentations were made to Dr Owen SHngerland Brace Cation group committee chairman presented him with a plaque of appreciation for his contribution to the Cubs during the past years He has retired from the leadership Gary Jensoo a past leader of the Scouts was presented with a pen and pencil desk set for his contributions to the Scout movement and Margaret Swain was presented with a past presidents pin in appreciaiton of her services as president of the ladies Auxiliary Venturer Terry- Crone expressed the boys appreciation to the ladies auxiliary for the help given the boys through their various activities The Cheerio Club paid special tribute to one of its members at their annual banquet last Saturday right Mrs Anna Carr was presented with a pin a special thank you for having served years as secretary of the club She was also presented with a commemorative cake Following the banquet a travelogue of Newfoundland was presented by Rev and Mrs March formerly of Mount Albert and special music was provided by Mrs Bone and Dan Bone A short while ago this column carried an article of the demolition of the areas first barn The house and ad jacent barn were built by William Thomas Rear the house in the 1860sand the barn at an earlier date which is the not known Now the house which has stood as a sentinel over the village of Mount Albert for more than 100 years has succumbed to progress falling under the demolition hammer Veteran employee of the Newmarket roads department John received a commendation marking years of service with the town at the annual convention of The Ontario Good Roads Association in Toronto last week He is seen above right receiving the framed commendation from Jack a former president 196667 of the Association He spent 40 years on Newmarket roads TORONTO John Stickland has been on the roads for years all of it in Newmarket A familiar figure in town since he started with the municipal roads department in Mr Stickland last week received a commendation at the annual meeting of the Ontario Goods Roads Association here recognizing his years of service He was the towns roads foreman for many years but last year took an inside job as He will reach his birthday and retirement age this November and will leave the department He hasnt definite plans for the future he says Well take care of that when we get to it he says but there is the indication there that he will not sit idly by and watch the days pass It could be said that John is a native of Newmarket The facts are that he was born at Belhaven near Keswick but moved to Newmarket with his family at the early age of eight years and has been a resident of the community ever since After finishing school he joined the towns roads department and decided to make that work his lifetime occupation Another longtime resident of Newmarket was selected to make the commemoration presentation to Mr Stickland at last weeks convention Officiating on behalf of the Association and delegates was Jack Chief Administrative Officer of The Region of York an Honorary Life Member of the Association and its president in He was performing the duty as a member of the Advisory Committee of Past Presidents UCW
