seem to have had a steady diet of them in recent years and just as regularly ignored them at least until it was too late to prevent the problem Check pollution or pretty soon fish wont be fit to eat nor water to swim in warned the experts Conserve or tap water wood electricity and other resources wont last another generation but nobody really believed Quit paving the farmland or there wont be a breadbasket left but did they Recently weve made a few startling discoveries Many of the fish in Lake Simcoe and the lakes as well as the Great Lakes are loaded with poison We either have to save electricity or face brownouts Ontario Hydro said recently as it announced its per cent price hike in as many ye Newmarket ran out of water the summer before last and still must tie new development carefully to its known supply Nobody is sure whether there is an unknown supply Meanwhile the cost of municipal water as well as its sewage treatment component have gone way up making water conservation a necessity for most if only for economic reasons Now amid this barrage of warnings and results comes what must seem like a cry in the wilderness from our public health dentists But its another warning and now is the time to heed it The dentists urge that the soft drinks and candy dispensed in school cafeterias in York Region be replaced with fresh fruit fruit juices nuts and cheese The move would combat the unnecessarily high incidence of dental disease they say When we are already spending tax dollars in York Region on an extensive dental educational program be set up in elementary schools the attempt to im prove the eating habits of these students as they move through the school system is only good common sense Along with the changed school food service the dentists last week urged a dential educational program be set up in the schools Most health problems and health costs are related to lifestyle diseases of which nutrition is a major element points out the dentists research paper Ontarios governmentsponsored medical insurance plan is already deep into a costcutting program and public pressure is now building for a similar dental care insurance program If we ignore the dentists warning now well pay heavily later just as were now paying for ignoring earlier warnings with our harvest of poison fish expensive electricity soaring water bills and other commodity problems Excop agrees with Twinney Wise decision by York council York Regional Council made a wise decision Newmarket Mayor Bob pointed out there last week when it deferred decision on whether were a number of provincial studies on or not it should increase representation from the municipal government underway the most more populous municipalities on the council important of which is the Robarts Commission Councillor Ron had asked on Metro Toronto council to approve another representative from Chairman Garfield Wright warned council J C lations between the argument ana a one was mat sow decisionmaking and generally con- nd th three representatives on region to poorer government council are not enough since there has been a Smmmat that Hie majority of the public per cent increase in the towns population since Gorans argument the regions inception However other municipalities have also shown a large population increase since then Vaughan Richmond Hill and Newmarket to name a few The deferral decision came after As an exYork Regional Police Officer and an expolice officer from London England I am also concerned with the policies under which the Regional force ap pear to be operating When I resigned my position with the York Regional Police over three years ago I stated at that time that I was Missatisfied with the policies of the depart ment and I have had no reason to change my mind since 1 place a great deal of importance upon accidents and in most cases serious injuries Not in areas where they are easily hidden so a larger number of tickets can be given Ive done it so I know It is this pressure for quantity that I feel is wrong Ask the inspectors who are phoned every morning by the deputy asking how many tickets were issued the day before I have come to believe over the years that there must be some kind of rebate to the region for the number of dollars that are sent into Queens Park for such summonses and was wondering if you could answer my queries in this respect months I never once met or spoke with the Chief and ended my service with the firm belief that his personnel management qualities were absolutely nil Upon one occasion I had what 1 thought to be a very useful suggestion to make with regards to inservice training which I discussed with other members of the force and finally with my Inspector who agreed that it be submitted to the Deputy Chief for con sideration This was done only a couple of weeks later to find the Inspector and myself summoned to Head Quarters for an interview representation by population is the only fair way fiiSKA to elect a government is the only way But before some municipalities get more quality of life will not deteriorate to such standards as it has in representation and possibly some a ong ook must be taken in Canada a person could not be mugged in Aurora can sleep well now iSSLftSUSt at least calling the police Aurora residents can sleep well now Yes its nice to know Metros highpriced fiff respedt because we know a plain frame house in the town help dont expect to get bombed in Aurora can best be gained is actually the secret base for Metro Toronto And what the heck If the worst comes to the their experiences with the worst maybe itll turn out the Aurora mayor and police officers who mayors and their top staff members in the event top aides have their own bomb headquarters represent law and order of a nuclear attack or other such disaster in River Drive Park or Belhaven or Zephyr n 1 would also point out with the Deputy to find that while I was serving ourselves admonished with the York Region for because the suggestion an approximate period of happened to have been placed on the Chiefs desk instead of the Deputy Chiefs The suggestion itself was never discussed and 1 never heard anything more about it Someone should point out to the Chief that industry spends thousands of dollars a year attempting to obtain constructive ideas towards an im provement in efficiency in their operations from employees I think it is about time that the Chief and certain members of the Police Commission try to be a little more farsighted when deciding upon policies that could have far reaching effects in later years Sutton Georgina betrayed illboord The Newmarket Citizen Band Radio Club will hold its general meeting at the Newmarket Community Centre very strict enforcement of the High way Traffic Act ap parently to such an extent that it is detrimental to public relations It is known fact that this type of duty does tend to have this effect even in the most highly respected forces but it is the methods that are em ployed that tend to lessen this effect I would quote as an example a recent speeding ticket that I myself received for doing in a I was among the crowd that attended the Feb meeting of Council That was a scenario worthy of Nixons Watergate Imagine Mayor George Burrows having to face his council and the tax payers of and admit he deliberately committed certain acts which resulted in a trailer camp being approved even though our elected council voted seven to one against it and thought the issue closed In all fairness one must not censure the two clerks and the building inspector as they were following the orders of the top executive in this township But for Burrows to keep repeating that he takes full responsibility is ludicrous especially as he refused to give the name of the solicitor who everyone I asked for their support for this man in the last two elections The above is not the only reason I phoned him at his office requesting information to which 1 was really entitled What a shock to he told I dont have to report to you and you have maligned Mayor Burrows to me many times Truth is I would not malign anyone but should know the onus is on hint to give proof of his statement Who in that room will forget the councillor who stood up and prefaced his defence of and a new election be Burrows with the words called Dont let the in- weve had the Hated costs published in now let us have the resurrect ion After what had gone on in that chamber the idea of equating Mayor Burrows with Jesus Christ seemed a newspaper fool you even if they were factual this township would save money in the long run VERA K MILLER Keswick MPH which advised him I paid without protest Technically the officer was quite correct in giving me the summons but at the time felt was a cheap ticket since I was ap proximately 30 feet away from the Begins sign going out of town into a higher speed limit The suggestion 1 would have with regards to a proper placement of a radar unit which I do not think anyone would quarrel with would be by placing them as the do at locations where there is a history of Let us hope it was not Mr as judging by the correspondence he was the advisor Even after being censured by each member of council as they gave their vote which ended in a tic he clung to power The big surprise of the affair was councillor Howard Shillington Known as a Dales supporter he put on the best per formance of the day with his impassioned defence of Burrows Right here I wish to apologize to each and Coroner supports chief on traffic ANSWER WIT ft tf jN AMD GST J As a physician coroner and taxpayer am concerned that the recently published dif ferences between Mr Twinney and Chief Craw ford and the alleged morale problems within the York Regional Police Force might un fortunately sway the opinion of the public and the police commission away from good sense The motto of our police force as of many others is To Serve and Protect As citizens of this Region we run the greatest risk of violent injury and death when we are on the roads either as drivers passengers or pedestrians This far out weighs all other causes of harm to us through violence The three single factors which can be identified as contributing to that are excessive speed driving whilst impaired and not wearing seat belts Anything the police can do to reduce this weekly carnage on our roads to protect us to increase our chance of getting home safely would be welcomed by every citizen and parent In medicine we save many more lives by giving tetanus and polio shots than we ever do with dramatic surgery but giving shots is not very exciting In police work ap prehending the oc casional major criminal is exciting and policing traffic must be dull We cannot calculate how many lives have been saved by these routine police checks In the figures given of over 4000 motorist checked were found to be impaired That unwelcome Interference bv the police may well have saved some of their lives as well as those of in nocent victims Remember Cruisers catch boozers but Hearses catch wor se OR JOHN Mount Albert By ROY GREEN to border on blasphemy However he left out the main event namely the betrayal without which there would have been no crucifixion or resurrection This was important as either of these men could take the role of Judas as the mayor knowing the ad mitted facts Actually all the councillors who voted for the mayor betrayed the trust of the people who put them in office by seeming to condone the mayors actions I maintain George Burrows should resign Li Second season high on prime time crime Television is well into its second season and the TV crime rate is at an all time high The second season is a nice way the networks have of replacing the un successful programs that began in September They are replaced largely by programs that didnt make it in September in the first season Crime in the prime viewing hours is on the upswing with the second season and every cancelled crime show from the first season must have been replaced with two crime shows in the second season Prime time crime can be seen regularly on such programs as Hawaii 50 and Hutch Most Wanted Adam12 Streets of San Francisco Police Story The Files and The Rookies There are crime shows to suit any taste in the family One good way to recognize a crime show is by reading the name Most of them are oneliners Kojak Ironside McMillan and Some are just initials SWAT and some have a double name Mary Mary Hartman that is a crime show in that is is a crime its on the air For those in the family who like to look at girls there is Charlies Angels and Wonder Woman For those who like a little scenery with their crime there is Hawaii 50 and The Streets of San Francisco For senior citizen crime buffs there is Bar- naby Jones and for those who likea steady diet of real crime there are news programs on throughout the prime time hours That doesnt even take into account all those crimefilled movies NHL Hockey and I havent listed The Gong Show which is also a crime If you listed the crimes as they do in the annual York Police Report you would find that murder is up per cent rape 30 per cent rob bery with intent per cent and just plain nastiness per cent Assault and Battery is over the per cent mark and there are also a pile of crimes like bombing stealing rockets from military bases and assassinating foreign leaders that Yorks police hardly ever get to investigate Traffic crimes except in Starsky and Hutch are way way down I guess the traffic war I waged by Chief Crawford is taking hold even on TV crime shows There is not one single incident of an actor not wearing his seat belt in last weeks prime time crime lineup Guns continue to be the chief crime weapons in prime time Knives have fallen out of fashion and bombs acidintheface bazookas and nuclear weapons are now in vogue In spite of raising protest to the crime and violence on TV networks arent about to change much of anything They are proud of the solution rate of TV crime Judging by last weeks programs I cant find any argument there In 90 per cent of the programs the crime was solved and the criminals apprehended within 30 60 or minutes The other per cent went unsolved but the networks gave the heroes another chance by making the programs twoparters and there is every indication that justice will be served this week One healthy trend I have noticed is the success rate of regular policemen over the private eyes Used to be the cops always came on the scene a good five minutes after the private eye had subdued nine guys rescued the gems and was beginning to maul the female lead That has all changed now The cops out number the private eyes and solve 90 percent the prime crimes The cops are now just as colorful as the old private eyes too Old Kojak sucks tootsierolls and calls everybody Baby a parrot perched on his shoulder changes costumes twice per program and Columbo stumbles around fracturing the English language in the worlds most unlikely McCloud gets the baddies with a lasso Ironside in a wheel chair thinks his way around the crooks and Charlies Angels make the crooks want to be caught so they can run their fingers through hair There are even Im told bionic cops who have superhuman strength and a few bucks of spare parts in their bodies but I havent had the intestinal fortitude to watch any of those shows yet I 1 1 Where do we go from here With TV crime increasing all the time I hope the TV cops can keep up their high rate of arrests and solutions But I think they are going to have to kill a lot of the crooks If they dont well have a tremendous in crease of courtroom shows on TV to handle all the criminals I hardly think that Tony Randall can handle all these crooks in his halfhour next year Charlies Justices Hawaii Court 50 Court Story The Rookie Lawyers and Judge Hutch His Honour Kojak The Sentences of San Francisco The Six Million Dollar Lawyer The Bailiff I hope the judges can handle them all If they are as successful as the cops well soon see a raft of prison programs a el I
