for a relaxation in traffic violation enforcement are heartily endorsed by the executive of the York Region Police Association In fact members say they hope his efforts will eventually see the operation of the force in a way which is most beneficial to the public At present the executive says policemen are doing their jobs in an aura of futility frustration knowing they are Suspend NMHA officials for life NEWMARKET The coach and manager of the Newmarket Juvenile Allstar team have been suspended for life by the Ontario Minor Hockey Association for dressing a player under a false name Coach Nestor Patzernuk manager Al Brown were suspended last week when it was discovered that their backup goalie didnt have a players card and was being used under an injured players name The had signed a playing card and it had ap parently been approved by the OMHA according to Brown But because the card hadnt yet been returned to the hockey club the player couldnt legally be used Brown and Patzernuk went ahead and dressed the goalie anyway because they needed a backup and couldnt bring up a midgetage player He was dressed for five games but didnt see any action Since he didnt have a card he was signed to the scoresheet under the name of the clubs previous backup goaltender who was injured earlier The affair was uncovered in last week where the Newmarket Club was playing in an playoff series The Newmarket clubs new backup a former resident of was recognized by the players They in turn saw that his name wasnt on the and the coach put in a protest to the We knew wed get our knuckles rapped Brown said Saturday But they didnt expect as severe a suspension because the player was never used Had we brought in a ringer then I could see it he added But we wouldnt have put him into a game Brown said the player was dressed for psychological reasons just to fill a spot on the bench Since he didnt play it didnt cost the team any games however Newmarket ended up losing the playoff series two games to one Patzernuk and Brown were suspended after the second game of the series and trainer John Porter took over behind the bench for the third contest They did kind of a fool thing Newmarket Minor Hockey Association chairman Jim Fitzgerald said But the two fellows did an awfully good job with the kids Brown said he was told there is no point in appealing the suspension for five years largely disliked by the public because they are being forced to issue traffic tickets without being allowed any discretion One member of the Association executive said Chief Bruce Crawford wants the traffic cMrges laid in in creased to the charges laid in To back this up he said that more than 100 radar speeding charges were processed from two shifts at No Division in Newmarket last week These and other statements were made during an exclusive Era interview with four members of the executive which was triggered by a near Pier brawl between Chief Crawford and Mr Twinney at police commission meeting last week During the meeting the chief and the commissioner snouted at each other across the boardroom table and on a number of occasions Chief Crawford called Mr Twinney a liar The outburst occurred after Mr Twinney said Chief Crawford did not need an extra 21 men he requested as he could release men from speed trap duty and checking the public for such minor offenses as seat belt violations The near bedlam meeting was adjourned by chairman Judge William Lyon after the board instructed Mr to bring to its March meeting recommendations on how he felt the force should be operated The police association executive said it would be happy to cooperate with Mr Twinney The executives main complaint is the chiefs over emphasis on laying traffic violation charges One member said an officer on speed trap duty is told by his superior to go to a certain place set up his radar and spend his shift there He must not leave until ordered to do so over his radio or if he is not getting any charges There is even a list of locations where it is easy to catch a large number of speeders on a shift he said The executive member gave Wellington St in Aurora and Davis Dr in Newmarket as examples Another area of complaint was the wholesale transfer of some officers at the first of the year The association executive said the transfers were made by Chief Crawford In some cases they were made for the sake of shaking things up and in other cases because certain officers see TRAFFIC page YongeSt plaza plans unveiled by developer Paul Photo THEATRE ARTS CLASS ENTERS
