The Era Newmarket Aurora Keswick Artist Keith Faulkner has show opening Feb Faulkner style 3diminsional AURORA In 10 years as a professional painter Keith Faulkner has developed a style which sets him apart from other aspiring ar tists Using a unique blend of pen and ink on stret ched canvas to accent acrylic polymer paint Mr Faulkner has ex panded the traditional two dimensional painting His work includes threedimensional canvas stacked two or more together to extend a sense of depth Other paintings are cut in eyecatching geometrical shapes A collection of Faulkner paintings will be exhibited Feb at the York Fine Art Gallery Snowball Village Faulkner paintings are bold with striking colors and strong lines completed by crosshatch pen strokes using India ink His work has drawn on experiences travelling in Canada the United States and Mexico For instance one painting depicts the af termath of an explosion at a Jones island ex plosives plant The viewer is looking out of the building through a shattered window at a railway car The explosion was real and the multi dimensional canvas lends a sense of reality to the painting including glass fragments There was virtually nothing left of the building after the disaster Faulkner said While Faulkner paintings are admittedly bold visual statements the artists message is often obscure or in tangible he admits Faulkner paintings begin with five or six ideas which are narrowed to a single point which reflects his feeling at the time It can be an idea or a mood how I feel af fects what I paint and the colors I use he said Keith Faulkner has no centra theme running through his collection but rather each painting is different each expresses a separate distinct thought Some paintings simply reflect a mood and the artist admits that in the interest of public opinion some messages are slipped in on the sly The artist should be a visual historian to por tray the life and times of today and in the past Mr Faulkner said Even pictures of old buildings are a statement on today a decrepit old building reflects a change a rejection of the past he suggests He avoids value judgments in his statements the point is not whether something is right or wrong but merely that it is the artist noted For instance a country setting reflects a less pressurized situation which might be less fulfilling Whether the inhabitants are better off depends on the reaction of the viewer Drawing on his background Mr Faulkner has applied for a Canada Council Grant to finance a one years study on canvas of the togging industry in British Columbia At one time during his travels the artist worked as a tree planter and for logging camps in the Victoria area He also worked for a saw mill Mr Faulkner believes his style would particularly suit such a study and would complete to paintings during the oneyear period He hopes to hear from Canada Council within the next month or two Although he has never formally studied his art Mr decided at about age 14 that he would become an artist Now at age he has completed about paintings He started like every kid your mother buys you an oil paint set and you go ahead In high school painting was Keith Faulkners hobby but at he finalized his decision and struck out on his own travelling around North America and Mexico painting as he went Faulkner was born in London England and was raised in Toronto He has also lived in Victoria BC and three years ago moved lo Aurora The artist has been featured at oneman shows at Ca Gallery Ltd in Victoria and Gallery Sharon House in
