Newmarket Flyers a 54 Provincial Junior A win Sunday at the Community Arena The Flyers who have played miserably of late in the third period played a strong game from start to finish despite using only two lines They had been outscored 160 in the final periods of the previous five games prompting assistant coach Jack to comment that some players are quitters and may lack pride Sunday the Flyers made Foran eat his words although he probably didnt mind as they refused to give up The Flyers trailed in the first then after tying it dropped behind early in the second- period They fought back with three straight goals within five minutes in the middle period to take a 42 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes Flyers lose to Weston NEWMARKET Newmarket Flyer coach Bill Forhan was ill and missed Thursdays game against Weston and hes probably glad he did His club with assistant coach Jack Foran behind the bench turned in a dismal performance and lost to Weston Dodgers in the Provincial Junior A game at the Community Arena The Flyers were in the game for two periods trailing 21 after the opening frame and 43 after the second but the visitors scored three quick goals at 804 and of the third to take a lead and added another marker at 14 to win the game handily Once they got that first goal in the third we had a bit of a lapse said after the game Thursday Weston opened the scoring on a at only seconds after Ron Stoneburgh was sent to the penalty box for highsticking Rob West got that one back at when he deked a Weston and goalie Brian Mitchell while the Dodgers were a man short Steve assisted It took only seconds for the Dodgers to regain the lead as Andy Clarke scored at In the second period the Flyers evened the score again as Allan Weddel who was called up for the game 1854 five seconds after killing off a penalty Weston took lead when Steve Penrose broke in alone and Flyer goalie Bill Jenkins Thirty seven seconds later West pulled the Flyers back within one as he scored his second goal of the game assisted In the third period the Flyers stuck to their close- checking style but it looked as if the same old story would repeat itself when Aurora scored at on a and again at 1456 to tie it at The lying goal didnt cause a letdown as it would have in previous games and Newmarket came back again Forechecking paid off deep in Aurora territory as Steve separated a Tiger from the puck and fed a pass lo Rick Uttley at the blue line fired a slapshot from the right point hat was blocked in front of the net but pounced on the rebound and slid it past Aurora goalie Mike Kasmetis Flyer coach Bill Forhan praised the efforts of his players and singled out Craig Chapman who scored two goals and played a gutsy game Forhan was surprised by the win however because of the Flyers poor showing in the previous two games But before the game they were up They wanted to win and thought they were going to win he said I was worried that wed get tired in the third When it was another goal wouldve taken a lot of pressure off he added But no wonder we beat them Forhan added Now that the brains former coach Gene are gone theyre left with only manager Jim Williams and owner John Sikura behind the bench Aurora opened the scoring on a at 1520 of the first period when Brian Dillon took a slapshot from the point that Benny deflected past Flyer goalie Mike Crawford At the Flyers tied it when Chapman raced to the front of the net took a pass from Rob West and slapped it past Kasmetis The Tigers regained the lead at of the second when John Fielding knocked in a loose puck in the crease At Novis knotted the score at 22 when he snapped a wrist shot from the slot that beat Kasmetis on his glove side The Tigers then ran into penalty problems They were already one man short when Larry Payne was assessed a minor He argued and was given a misconduct plus the automatic minor The Flyers scored 39 seconds later when got the puck back to off a faceoff He passed to who shot into a crowd in front of the net and Chapman knocked in the rebound then took a penalty putting the Flyers two- men short once again and Bryan Alexander beat Kasmetis on his glove side with a shot from the blue line In the third Crawford continued to make big saves for Newmarket but the Tigers finally broke through at 1435 when Fielding scored off a scramble in front Twentyseconds later Kevin Faulkner scored from the slot on a to tie the score setting the stage for Goddens winner Tiger manager Williams said despite the loss he isnt concerned about his club Newmarket got good We had 50 shots and we played for minutes in the second Popiel asked to resign as coach Aurora Tiger goalie Mike Kasmetis appears unperturbed as Newmarkets Craig Chapman flies through the goal crease after being tripped by Auroras Rick Van Gog in Sundays game Van Gog was given a penalty The Flyers won the game 54 on a goal by Ernie Godden with left to play AURORA Gene was relieved of his duties as coach of the Aurora Tigers Saturday evening hours before getting a new job as coach of the Provincial Junior A Markham Waxers is the second Tiger coach to get the axe this season He succeeded Steve Cuddie who lasted only four games Tiger manager Jim Williams said notified him that he had the Markham job at am Sunday morning and then announced his resignation Williams and owner John said the decision was Popiels However Popiel when contacted Monday said he didnt quit as coach I was let go by Aurora Other people knew before I knew that I was let go He said Williams called him Saturday evening at pm to tell him he was through Popiel then received a call from offering him the Waxer coaching job and I couldnt resist I didnt go to Markham I was let go by Aurora I think I was set up said Owner Sikura said Sunday that ultimate aim is to coach a Major A team so ob viously the Markham job is a pretty good spring board is affiliated with the Toronto Marlboros If he thinks hes got a better deal I wish him luck said Thats definitely not true Popiel said in response to Sikuras statement If Dixie offered me a job I would ve taken it I just want to coach But Im not going to worry about that Im just going to do my best in Markham Popiel said He wasnt happy with me It was the owners decision but Im letting bygones be bygones Im gone from there its behind me Popiel said The whole thing was rewarding However I did the best could with what I had I dont have hard feelings They gave me a chance and management held different philosophies on the type of players the Tigers should use Popiel preferred to use younger players He said hed rather develop a young player rather than bring in an ex perienced veteran to take his place When the Tigers went on their unbeaten streak earlier in the season we had a lot of youth who were really striving for something Seventeen and 18yearolds will give you a lot However Sikura wanted to win a championship according to Popiel and to do so brought in veteran players He chose the route theyre in right now Williams said Monday that he has a few candidates for the vacant coaching spot He said he may make a decision in a few days regarding a new coach Art Plasschaert Hes not getting older Gordie Howe George Blanda Hank Aaron and Art Plasschaert theyre all one of a kind The first three youre likely familiar with Theyre athletes whose careers spanned decades men who never seemed to grow old But Art Plasschaert Hes cut from the same mold Hes an ageless athlete who continues to improve while the three gents are about to or have already hung up their hockey skates and bats Art Plasschaert is at an in the sport of speed skating But the resident of Queensville is still one of the best in Canada despite the growing number of good young Canadian speed skaters Ted years ago Art was 13th overall in Canada Today he is still the 16th best skater com peting against men to 15 years Art I inert 34yearold speed skater from takes a lap at the Sharon Arena that I had to get back in condition He began competing again mainly as a senior since he was over and won the Ontario Class senior Championship which meant he had to go back into the A division against younger skaters He finished third overall in Ontario in and was in Canada last year Times are faster now so Im happy with that He skated the metres for the first lime in eight years at the
