NEWMARKET NOTES By Mary McGsiei Arthur Chamberlain of Newmarket has been elected president of the York North NOP Riding Association Keith is the new vicepresident Jack will con tinue in his role as treasurer and chief financial officer and Ralph Birch will be the riding secretary Both men reside in Newmarket Other of ficers are Vince Gentile Betty Birch Newmarket Kalhy Prentice King Barbara Perrin Nobteton John Hunter of Newmarket and Jim Dobte of Whitchurch will head the election plan ning committee for Ian Scott the NOP candidate for the riding Mr Scott was elected as candidate at a general membership meeting last June One of the top priorities of the new executive is the preparation for a possible spring election A number of social activities have been planned and the Vandorf Hall has been booked for a dance March success ice fishermen have been having this year for lake trout in Lake Mary now speaks from ex perience We were fishing in Bob and Randy hut off Island Grove and caught two trout within a couple of hours A rather strange thing also hap pened we landed a bass in ft of water which is something I have never heard of before in the winter Of course we put it back because bass are out of season Other fishermen around us were also catching trout mostly on spreaders It seems the whole lake has turned around We didnt hear of one white fish being landed Verna Smyth and Marion Rogers both of Newmarket have returned from a two- weeks cruise of the Caribbean on the S S Vera Cruz The ladies visited more beautiful islands and encountered continuous sunshine excellent food and pleasant company The Vera Cruz is a new ship in the Caribbean and is run by Strant Cruises of Toronto Dominion Stores limited A group called the Smoke advertised public meetings earlier this month to be held at the Optimist Club in Newmarket on Jan and at 730 pm Ac cording to Barb Watt of Newmarket five people attended the meeting and waited for more than an hour and nobody from the Smoke showed up So they finally went home in a huff and a puff Utile play on words there We wonder if Roy Green is still the loyal and true supporter of the Toronto Argos after they dumped Mel Profit from the CFRB Radio game broadcasts apparently because he is too critical I thought the had a little more class The McGouen household has always got a big kick out of Mel Profit As a matter of fact we would always use the CFRB game broadcast and turn off the audio on television when the games were on Former York MP John Roberts once told a local reporter hat he was an avid Argo fan until hap pened by and announced that Farrow belonged on Bolton Ave To get heme he had to cross the busy traffic on Davis Dr so a kind man from Aurora offered to drive our friend home Farrow waited at the front doors of the hospital while the man got his car The last we saw of Farrow he was sitting in the back seat with his paws up on the front licking the mans ears and face and ab solutely delighted meeting of the Sharon Womens In stitute Firemen Brian Peat explained the nine pieces of firefighting equipment housed in the Davis Dr and Main St halls When he had to respond to a call acting deputy fire chief Jim Bond took over showing the group film on fire detection and prevention The Newmarket Fire Department is manned by seven paid firefighters and 27 volunteers members were told during
