public support and support from the Georgina Chamber of Commerce to hold the Georgina Heritage Winter Carnival Feb and What coordinator Jack Kierstead chamber general manager Tom Foster and the others who have worked over the past few months to smooth the rough edges down to a final calender of events need are 200 volunteers to come for ward to help make the carnival their carnival a success During the past election halls wore filled in Jersey and Sutton with people wanting to know what the various candidates could do to make Georgina Township a better place to live work and grow up in The people asked about industrial development About the fate of Lake Simcoe About their future It now appears that what the township has is a lot of and very few doers Most will ask What does a winter carnival mean to me Its cold and I work five days a week as it is the excuses will go But what the people of Georgina are missing by not lending a hand is the entire point of what they wanted to know from their politicians at election time What does a winter carnival mean to Georgina It means putting Georgina Township on the map and displaying what Georgina has to offer to outsiders The carnival committee is planning a publicity blitz that could briiis people from all across Ontario into Georgina Township for the weekend The impression they take away no matter how small could be the deciding factor in whether a family moves to Georgina a business locates in Georgina or someone just decides to come back next year A carnival also means money in the pockets of township residents It seems many businessmen dont realize that fact It was reported at the carnival com mittee meeting Thursday that around per cent of those who have made themselves available during the festivities are nonchamber of commerce members The time has come for the people and the businessmen of Georgina to pick up the ball and run with it The committees can only do so much toward making the Heritage Winter Carnival a success Sitting back never turned hopes into realities ROY GREEN Imagine J1J em I Dear Maw How are up to Creek I its a mite quiet now what with the usual heaps of snow and the road to the still all iced up GUEST EDITORIAL THIS BAD WEATHER THINGS CANT GET ANY WORSE LLBO bungled its job Toronto radio station commentator Phil Ross is a native of Newmarket and makes his home in the Bay view Hills area of town not far from Huron Heights Secondary School He wrote the article below fo use on station Today a little example of the kind of bureaucracy which governments allow to build up to the point where the bureaucracy serves not the public but itself prime example of this kind of organization which flourishes among all those boards and commissions in Ontario is the often blind often stupid outfit known as the Liquor License Board of Ontario An example of just how thoughtless this particular little backwater of political patronage can be is happening right now in my home town The approved a tavern license for a run- ofthemill fish and chips shop in the town of Newmarket The license was issued in December However it was only this week that The mayor and council of the town became aware of it Now the law reads that a notice of such an application must be advertised locally so that any residents with objections may be heard So this application was duly advertised on the back page of the Toronto Star Now Newmarket is miles away and is served by two excellent local newspapers But the bureaucratic bunglers at he were likely not aware of that Naturally anyone who wanted to object or comment didnt have the chance And object a lot of people would have done Because the new tavern just happens to be next door to the largest high school in the area Every 18yearold student and a whole lot more who can pass for the legal age now have a convenient place to slop back booze during lunch hour The brain- trust at the LLBO is apparently not aware that the number one drug problem in Ontario is drinking by the young And what is on the other side of the new tavern The largest gun shop in the entire Region of York Now that gun shop is well protected and well run But what is to prevent some drunk from throwing a brick through a window grabbing a gun and starting shooting That kind of thing can happen In the light of this the town council was slightly more than upset So the mayor Bob Forhan got in touch with Eber J Rice the Chairman of the LLBO And what did he reply That the board had complied with the requirements of the board Now that kind of leave it or lump it attitude on the part of Mr Rice would lead one to believe that he carries out his duties at the taxpayers expense with all the sensitivity of the pudding suggested by his surname Sure this is only a small example in one small town but its indicative of the reason so many people are cynical about government why they feel government is remote and uncaring Sidney Handleman the minister responsible for the LLBO should take a look at this case And if Eber J Rice doesnt come up with a good excuse he should be fired right out the door Letters to the editor Whats happened to track I a concerned car racing fan have been waiting patiently for the past three or four years hoping to see the race track on the con cession south of the Ravenshoe Rd open up and watch the super modified race cars buzzing the track I have been going to HHSS T oppose tavern billboard Billboard Is provided as a service by The Era to groups and organizations wishing publicize coming events If you or your Dance group will hold its monthly dance Jan 28 at the Main St Fire Hall at 9 pm A lunch will be served and all are welcome The recent granting of a tavern licence to a fishandchip store near our school prompted the adoption of the following motion Be it resolved that We the members of the Huron Heights Secondary School Branch of District do con demn the awarding of a liquor licence to any enterprise in close proximity to the school on the grounds that it imposes unnecessary pressures on students and teachers At a meeting on Jan 20 of the Huron Heights branch of District OSSTF this motion was passed unanimously Our business is the education of young people of a very sensitive age We do not need a tavern near our school The use of tavern premises by students who are of the age of majority and the risk of the use of the same premises by underage students will not help with cither teaching or lear ning There exists also possibility of offensive behavior by a small number which will be felt by many other students either in the classrooms In the cafeteria or on the busride home The Liquor Licensing Board of Onlario has evidently not taken Into con sideration the proximity of a large secondary school when granting the licence and has therefore failed to protect the in terests of students We urge all in terested and concerned people to protest the awarding of this licence and to object to the licensing of any com mercial premises for sale of alcohol in the vicinity of our schools PAUL LUTC Branch President Branch Oswego Speedway In ternational Classic race for past years and 1 think that Ontario should take a page from this small towns book Now thai Speedway is closed we race fans dont have any racing to go to unless we drive for miles I went last sum mer to Cayuga Speedway to see the supers put on a show and you could hardly get room to sit in the stands I do not know if East Gwillimbury and surrounding townships realize the money and employment plus free advertising it would bring to the area As far as the noise is concerned the newer race cars are not that loud any more and what if we have to listen to it one night a week Also about the traffic coming to and from the track it is an ideal location because you have at least five main roads north and south from which you could get to and from the track plus additional cross roads So I do hope that the right people read this and I get some answers as what can be done if anything because 1 do not think that I am the only one interested in this super project Interested people in any phase of this project please write to or telephone ROY Keswick Telephone 4765696 Protests lounge licence As a parent I am shocked that a liquor licence has been granted to a restaurant that is only a few yards from the largest secondary school in Newmarket It could create a social problem not only for year old students but younger ones as well As the can didate for this area am amazed at the procedure involved in granting this licence There were no advertisements in local papers the hearing was in Toronto and our own local elected officials knew nothing of the op- plication until after the fact Residents were not given opportunity to express their views This is just one more example of how a government which has been in power too long disregards and ignores the people whom it is supposed to serve IAN SCOTT NDP York North 190 Prospect St Newmarket Sports coverage terrific May I take this op portunity to thank you Gary Loewn sports editor and The Era for doing such a terrific job in covering the hockey results from the South Shore Youll never know Ihe happy reaction have had from the boys and the parents since the write- ups have been in the paper As you may know Ml previously two other local papers used to print them for us hut then decided they didnt want to use the space and asked us to slop sending in the news The children were very disappointed as this had- a big thrill to see their games written up instead of just straight statistics The comments and phone calls I have had show that the extra effort you have put into the writeups to make them much more in teresting for everyone is really appreciated I just wish you could have seen the expression on Bobby Cooks face when he saw last weeks We are entering four teams in a House League Tournament in March and hope you will be interested in those results I noticed a column about community events If possible could our Fund Raising Dance be mentioned in it It is for Keswick Minor Hockey to be held in Keswick Arena Friday Jan at pm Tickets per couple Always a sump tuous buffet prizes bar and lots of fun If you and paper I think it had to be one of the biggest thrills to join us wed be more of his over him but some of your hunters has real bad and might to on ever thing that moves blue or How is little Thad Did he get over that dredful fear of btue dogs Kin he set down now without a pillow on his hind quarter Speaking of pillows and sore behinds the dangdest thing is agoin on hyar at your York Countin Hospital You mind they added a pile more beds and pillows and new rooms some tune back Well durned iffen they usin them Not all of them anyway Aint got money from Billy Davis tariariario guvmint they says The hospital folks also says they is cancelled all your elec tive surgery is I surgery on your politicians what didnt git reelected guess thats what they means when they says they is a new image they jest drop in to your York Hospital and ask toi your surgery for the next go round So all them beds aint being used and I is atryin to weed out all the weak sisters and your sissies I thinks what they is doin is makin ever one walk out of your hospital after you have surgery you can climb the table when they s done soing you up and not need to lie down well I let you have any kind of surgery eelective or jest private cityzen In last weeks Eery paper there was an artichoke about a feller who was arrested after he said he was gonna blow the hospital up The story said the feller got a mite vezzed when they wouldnt let him in to vUit a patient Ill wager that they didnt let him in cause the patient didnt have a bed and was jest walking up and down the halls Anyway this feller phoned and said he was gonna blow the place up The boys in your blue uniforms wasnt too long in takin this feller away and they really gave him the double First they charged him with threatening Thats cause he threatened to blow up the place You kin un derstand that Then Ill be dadburned they didnt charge him with something else and you jest wont believe this To quote from the Eery it says also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to blow Can you jest believe it First they charges him with threatening to blow up your hospital then they charges him again cause he failed to do it Thatll shore teach you not to make Idull threats Somehow it jest dont seem richt though hospital also ran water last week So did some of the schools hyar It the provinces fault though Seems your main water broke on that side of town Pipes broke cause it was so durned cold Ever bit of water in thatr big mushroomy water tank jest leaked out and inter the storm sewers Its dang lucky that the boys from the fire depot had jest gotten a boat and motor cause they jest rowed up and down your storm sewers till they found where the water broke and your works depot from your hub fixed it up Its the first time they had to use the boat cause your Fairy Lake got no water in ih Thats right they drained it again TOs time its so they can fix the damn Water rates is gone sky high bouts and they says its because of the big pipe But the main water keeps breaking and they takes the water outta Fairy Lake all the time taint no wonder its gonna cost more They says the new water and socage rates is based on a userpays cistern Hixxoner the Mayor Bobby says the new cistern is the only way it can be done You pays for what you use Means folks a bouts has gotta be careful about how much water they uses and how many limes a day they hits the handle on the You mind I told you all about toylets here in your Hub they aint hardly no regular outside con veniences like to home in the Creek I got richt in the conservin mood and even asked a young gal who moved in down the street iffen we could take turns havin showers at her place then mine She is richt frendly and says Im to come over tonight but not to worry about a shower I reckin Ill bring a towel anyway This new userpays water and socage cistern might cost me more money but it sure has helped my social life Speaking of social life I hafta go now Maw We is going out and see if the province has noticed that the population hyar has gone up and they will come along and changethe numbers on the road signs It might be some time afore I again Son to you j
