AURORA IN 76 rt AURORA The towns administration succumbed list month to political crises which punctuated politics over the past year It began with a push by Councillor Bob Roth this spring to open committee meetings to the public and take secrecy out of Aurora Failing to convince Mayor Evelyn Buck a staunch supporter of closed meetings and the old guard on council Councillor Roth urged a sweep of council in the December municipal elections Problems of being the lone reform watchdog on a council of eight so discouraged the coun cillor that he declined to seek reelection this year This spring mayor the building spans Tannery Creek in silent tribute to the woman who urged its construction nine the fight of nearly months to keep program open Also this spring the town locked horns with Aurora merchants over the proposed Northern Centre The issue culminated In a decision by the Ontario Cabinet against ordering a second Ontario Municipal Board hearing The decided following a fourday hearing in May against objections from Aurora merchants it on the basis of com petition Citizens took up arms this fall to protest a road through Sheppards Bush to service the towns industrial park Mayor Buck and council urged road to take industrial park traffic off residential streets in the older part of town and facilitate traffic from the industrial area to Wellington St The proposal revived a feud between the town and the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority which manages Bush The and owners the Ontario Heritage Foundation despite claims by some of refused to consider a road her constituents that the through the conservation move would be too costly The furor caused by that issue has alt but been forgotten by most citizens as have the problems with the reconstruction of Wellington St W which drew protests and petitions by residents However Endow Aurora which was form ed to fight recon struction of Wellington St continued its movement during the Wellington St East work this year trying to save most of the trees along the street Another issue forgotten by most residents is the closure of the Aurora Day Care Centre this fall after a area leaving the town no recourse but to provide an alternative By December the town proposed a cul-de- sac to the Vandorf to service the park The towns industrial park also came under fire this fall because of lagging sales
