L- The Era Aurora Keswick Wed Jan 5 5 976 a yeat of success for communi Math and their teacher at Huron Heights Secondary School built this 40foot long slide rule and set a world record With it above are teacher Clarence Hay right and students Randy Meyer left and his brother Jeff NEWMARKET Nineteen seventysix may have been a bust on the international scene but greedy Arab ail shieks and the impending bankruptcy of New York didnt dampen the enthusiasm of local volunteer organizers wrote success story after success story How about that Alexander Public School Reunion last August When retired Alexander teacher Haines set out to organize the threeday reunion to mark the phasing out of the successor to Newmarkets first school many envisioned a tea and crumpets type afternoon party Instead Ha put together a dynamic committee of volunteers who in turn organized an actionpacked three days which was attended by thousands of former students And how about Sharon Nash and Kathy two young mothers from the Bay view Hills area who read a magazine article about the Block Parent program and decided it was something Newmarket needed They thought theyd organize one in a small way last spring and hope it would spread from their neighborhood Before they knew it the Kinsmen Club was in with men and money and when school reconvened this fall Block Parent signs were evident all over town And then there was the story of Alex Eves a familiar figure on Main St for most of the years of this century who at once again entered the Toast- masters Club speaking contest cleaned up in all the local matches and went on to national event in Montreal where he won one of the top honors Success didnt neglect many of the communitys regular annual events either the Lions Music Festival was bigger and belter than ever and for the first time needed a special Festival of Stars just for pianists Grace Churchs 13th annual Mission Con ference which this year featured missionaryspeakers from Latin American raised for the cause not bad for one Weeks work And while on the subject we could point out that under the stewardship of Rev Grover Crosby Grace last year built the first new church in Newmarket In many years and included in it the towns first privatelyfunded day care centre Even the farmers who last spring got the year off to a miserable start with snowstorms in April and May bounded back with a wet summer and produced fine crops Huron Heights instructor Clarence Hay and a group of his bright young students wrote two worlds records in first they used a computer to design the worlds largest magic square a mathematical puzzle and then they built the biggest slide rule the world has ever seen a foot long monster After almost two decades of dreaming and scheming trying and planning the Newmarket Op timist Club finally in 1976 saw the blocks laid for its Optimist Youth Centre A gala official opening was held in November and the whole centre Is now almost paid for The year did have its downers of course A York United Appeal fund was launched and nearly sank in its first season falling many thousands of dollars short of its goal and YorkSimcoe Member of Parliament Sinclair Stevens spent trying to win the Progressive Conservative party leadership in February only to show so badly in the first ballot that he withdrew and threw support to eventual winner Joe Clark who spent a lot less Average property tax bills in Newmarket climbed about despite the town councils reduced levy Elsewhere on the political front things were turned down to a simmer no new subdivisions were ap proved In Newmarket but plans were on the boards for the five or six which will be built In phases over the next decade Last spring council legislated a maximum fine for owners of trespassing pets but after a howl of rage from pet owners cut that way down Fears last winter that the old arena might fall Into the river and that a high tide might carry away the St bridge prompted a crash program to see the channelization of the river completed by November Strangely enough when the engineers who had toW us the old bridge was just about ready to topple into the river came to knock it over they couldnt It took them the best part of a week with a huge ball and chain They had to chip it away piece by piece During the downtown merchants launched a plan which next spring should give Main St its first face lift and as the hopes of one group of businessmen for a Newmarket radio station license died away last spring another was making plans to try again On the dark side of the news Newmarket ex perienced its first unsolved murder last year Sara Jane Carlin was found dead in her apartment in the Eagle St senior citizens building and police called it murder That was in August and as the year ended York Regional Police have indicated no progress has been made in solving the case Aex Eves who of 84 became one of Canadas top orators BUILT THREE YEARS AGO Reininger plant to open soon NEWMARKET Built three years ago the and Son Ltd plant in the in dustrial park south of Davis Dr will be oc cupied and in production this spring council was Wednesday The plant was built three years ago by the Don Mills metal stamping firm but has remained unoccupied because has not been able to sell its Metro Toronto factory or make satisfactory mortgage arrangements to com plete ihe Newmarket plant The new factory is to employ up to people and last Wednesday town council learned the firm is negotiating new mortgage arrangements hopes to complete land scaping and other details this spring and move its operations here Regional Councillor Ray reported that owner Richard told him last week the final details are being ironed out He said lawyers were asking council for access over a onefoot reserve the town holds across the road to the plant to clear the deed for mortgage arrangements Council approved the access turning down as unen forceable a suggestion by Councillor Aubrey Smith that it be conditional on a completion and oc cupation deadline January Starts Wednesday January 5th Coats There are still many cold days ahead Find cozy comfort In the natural
