defeated teams from NY St Catherines Niagara Falls NY and before beating Rochester Americans 31 in the final game Two Newmarket players defenceman Brian Witherow and leftwinger Mike were selected to the tour naments allstar team Although they werent named to the allstar squad Newmarket goalies Scott Stevens and Dean Mudie played major roles in helping the Boyd club win the championship They allowed only eight goals in the five games In the final game Tony Ledwick scored the first goal then after Rochester tied it he scored again to put Newmarket ahead Steve Ruby added an unassisted insurance goal Derek Swain Macoun and Daren Ertl each had one assist In the fourth game Newmarket trailed but came up with three unan swered goals to win Alex Walker and Ruby scored the first two goals Brent notched the lying marker then Macoun fired the winning and goals Steve Withers Ruby Walker ard Richard Schmidt each had one assist Walker scored three times as Newmarket blanked Niagara NEWMARKET Newmarket Flyers played their best game of the season Thurs day but major penalty to Jeff Macoun late in the third period spoiled a chance for a win and the Flyers had to settle for a Provincial Junior A tie with the North York Rangers The Flyers had taken a 31 lead in the third period and the 600 fans at the Community Arena were anticipating an upset win over the firstplace Rangers However with only 614 left to play was caught highsticking a North York player and was sent to the penalty box for five minutes North York scored twice while he was off at 1412 and to tie the game Flyer coach Brian Million said the Macoun penalty was kind of a cheap call He said he couldnt blame Macoun for taking the penally after the game he had played Macoun had played 35 or 40 minutes elite group of judokas recently when she was awarded the black belt In judo Cathy is one of only about women In Ontario to carry a black bell and few of them are still active She also becomes the first woman black belt at the HoTai Judo Club In Ballantrae of which she is a member Cathy took the exam in front of three judges at the Hatashita Judo Club In Toronto Dee 5 but was just recently annual Aurora Bantam Hockey Tournament which gets underway Friday evening at the Community Centre Among the entrants In this years tournament are two Quebec clubs from Pte Claire and and two Now York State teams from Amherst and Niagara Falls They will meet teams from Ontario centresAurora Newmarket Belleville South Ottawa Thornhill Brampton Kitchener Richmond Hill Kingston and Trenton Kitchener won the championship last year defeating Newmarket in the final game while Sault Ste Marie beat to capture the consolation title About players from of the teams will be billeted by local families according to tournament organisers Jack Macfarlane and Doug Botham The Aurora tournament is highly regarded because It Is one of the few tournaments that still billets players When the tourney was first held in It was one of only three bantam tournaments in On- according to Peewee and midget seemed to be the two most prominent tournaments so we came up with the Idea for a bantam tourney There
