THE ERA Serving York County Since 1852 Phone NqwmarkellWS St Phono Aurora lit Will we have a community school in January Were York County school board trustees only paying lip service to the concept of com munity school programs in the region when they endorsed it last fall This appears to be the case They allowed a token program to proceed at Oak Ridges Public School because it was funded by an Ontario government grant but they have steadfastly refused to take any action that would help a fullfledged community school operate In Newmarket despite the fact that they have had a detailed proposal before them for many months Newmarket Parks and Recreation Com missioner Dan Shannon has been developing the resources for a community school program In Newmarket for three years and was ready to initiate one this September Then he postponed it to January Still nothing has come from the board and if some cooperation isnt forthcoming soon It may have to he postponed again Newmarkets program has the blessing of of I provincial to help fund it the tune of has been ap proved in principal Yet it is stalled because the school board has tin si hoot d ally dm community not taken a stand on it and without that in sellouts dorsement no decision can be made on which Ifildms immediately culling school to use away the ml time which engulfing the Instead the board appears determined to program should bury the community school administrator lobe opt In i ilii I iiiuii iln program committees studying recommendations from so Mr Shannon and bin colleagues in other other committees and then making further communities will him with and recommendations to more committees should insure Hint Newmarkets January We hope appearances are deceiving and that target date is met Job well done at A grassroots communityschool effort which succeeded is in the news this week A twoyear program by a group of parents in the Meadowhrook Public School neighborhood in Newmarket to build a creative playground at the school is finished The parents and the firms which donated material deserve commendations from the community So does the school board The nowcompleted playground contains a log pyramid a sand box a slide two teepees a playhouse balance beams tractor tire sand boxes a climbing lower three houses a log post balancing unit and a small amphitheatre with seats Tills playground will be an asset to the school and the neighborhood long after the children whose parents built it no longer need it It also demonstrates a grassroots neigh borhood program can the same time utilize and contribute to a school as a community facility Letters to the editor Newsroom Notes J In 1925 a prime minister was defeated By TERRY CARTER lo dig i iiji Ircnih iirmiul iwo i holes Tor donated lar
