folly etc The American College Dictionary There is always the danger that satire will not be recognized I suppose that can happen to I even the best satirists as well as columnists for weekly newspapers Id like lo think it happens to the great ones and not just to me In a column some two weeks ago I took out my anger at the overcommercialism of Christmas I did it sarcastically At least I I thought I did In a mocking way I purported to throw the lurches out of Christmas and let merchants and advertisers have their way To take every vestige of religion out of Christmas Same people believed I was serious Hi I received a letter from a lady who was my comments and The Eras publisher tells me the editor received a letter from a person who is both a subscriber and an advertiser The person according to the publisher now wishes to cease being cither see Letters to the Editor Honest folks was only kidding I detest the overcommercialization of Christmas as much as you do 1 was angry about it and I tried to be which begins its Christmas advertising before December And I will use the work satire at the beginning or end of all future columns in which I intend to use that device Rolling right along The accidental discharge of loo gallons of gasoline into the water supply of a large part of Newmarket had its lighter side 1 know there are people who arent laughing hut many the local pun makers had a field day with the incident lliere wire the obvious lines about Putting a tiger In out tank and finding regular gas in cold and hi test in the hoi tap One story concerned a dog who drank some of the polluted water hapless canine started running around in crazed circles After an hour or so of this he dropped to Ihe ground His concerned owners called out the vet who came and checked shaggy dog where he lay Is he dead Doc asked the owner No replied vet He just ran of gas Note to dog story lo the best of my knowledge is untrue The names where changed to protect the innocent The vet has since left town and dog fully recovered now refuses to comment on the matter Dont write me as I am changing my address This was the last in a series of dogsdrinking gasoline stories And now for something com pletely different The Newmarket Womens Club has received official recognition and the week beginning Nov has been declared as Newmarket Womens Week is as you may know International Womens Year and the local club is planning a number of events for that week to commemorate 1975 before it fades away Carolyn Wood or the Newmarket Library will be hosting five shows on to that week interviewing ladies of some local repute Other things are being planned as well and you will hear more about this special week in later columns Returning to the Dogs A large storm is brewing over apparent irregularities in the way the animal shelter in Aurora is conducting the business of dogs and cats Cats some stories have it are destroyed almost immediately and some dogs are not kept the required period of time before being made available for adoption There are also reports that the figures on dogs dont tally In reports of each of the past j four months supplied by the Humane Society appears there are animals unaccounted for The worst thing seems to be the fact that Humane Society officials particularly manager of the Aurora shelter has to this point refused to comment to the press 1 hope this situation is rectified quickly and thai proper answers to these questions are coming People tend to get terribly upset about animals and possible misuse or abuse of same I the problem is not rectified emotions tend to get in the way of any reasoned logical solutions
