The Era Newmarket Aurora NEWMARKET Trading Days Festival Schedule of Events Newmarket was founded in the early years of the 19th century as a fur and mill trading centre In fact the fur trade gave the town its name it became the new market when fur traders from York Toronto decided to get a jump on the spring trading by establishing a post on the Holland River This saved the Indian and voyageur trappers the long portage down to York So last February when the Newmarket Historical Committee decided the towns faltering fall festival should be rejuvenated as a spring affair dedicated to our furtrading forefathers the idea struck a responsive chord with other civic groups Within a short time the Optimists Kinsmen Kinettes and Civltan clubs were participating as were the Hills Community Association the Big Brothers of York a Presbyterian Church ladies group the Horticultural Society and Boy Scout groups and about 20 other organizations Over groups and individuals will have stalls in a blocklong trading fort area laid out next to the site where the great elm stood under which he first traders did business with their Indian trappers from the north west There will be a Farmers Market a parade clowns balloons a dunking board a canoe race up the Holland River antique car displays including those from the Craven Foundation a giant white elephant sale a flower show antique displays historical tours a pet show pioneer tests of skill lots of food a donkey baseball and three dances A carnival with a merrygoround and other rides will be in town the Teeumseth wilfbeon the scene all day with their longrifles and there will rlehl founded THURSDAY The Festivals threeday travelling carnival six rides in all will open Thursday morning in the parking lot east of Main St between Timothy and Water streets FRIDAY The carnival will operate east of Main St all day 8 pm a recreation department teen dance featuring the CHUMs Scott Carpenter and Commander Grease will be held in the community centre SATURDAY 730 Newmarket Farmers Market will open for the first time this season in the Community Arena Fresh produce and fresh baking will be featured am the Bayview Boy Scouts will hold a pancake breakfast at the Farmers Market Oldfashioned flapjacks butter syrup and coffee at bargain prices am the carnival rides open for business am A parade will come down Main St from the north end The Newmarket Citizens Band will march along with the Tecumseh the 94th Air Cadet squadron the air cadet band the beer wagon antique cars horses and wagons the canoe racers and a fire engine the Trading Fort opens the Newmarket Op timist Club has undertaken to organize this feature of the day Between 30 and craft booths and displays will be gathered in the fort area on Timothy St near Market Square Included in these will be demonstrations by members of the Newmarket Crafters who will have clay there to be worked and will have a wool rug hooking display on which people can work their own designs The Newmarket Public Library will have a special exhibit of paperback books provided by the publishing firm of McClelland and Stewart Ltd the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority will have a display in the area and the Beta Sigma Phi sorority will have an oldfashioned iced lemonade stand going 10 am A dunking board will go into operation at Wesley Brooks Conservation Area It is being sponsored by the Newmarket Snowmobile Club This club will also have clowns in the festival area giving away balloons to the children 10 am The Tecumseh a group of history buffs from neighboring Tecumseh Township who dress in frontier costume and display frontier skills will begin their show following the parade Most of their activities will be on the shores of Fairy Lake where they will throw tomahawks and knives fire black powder guns and put on a show The Ridgerunners show will go on all day 10 am to pm Two displays of antique automobiles The Barrie Antique Car Club will be displaying its vehicles in the parking lot next to the carnival and out at Upper Canada Mall the famous Craven Foundation collection of antique cars will be on display 10 am to pm Pony rides for the kids down by the carnival 11 am Newmarket Optimists White Elephant Sale in the parking lot in front of the community centre 1 1 am One L of a Good Pet Show Judging will take place at 11 am at Wesley Brooks Conservation Area so whether you have a trained flea or a pet giraffe bring it along The show is being sponsored by the Big Brothers of York and prizes will be awarded for the Longest the Leanest the Lovingest the Liveliest the Latest the Littlest the Largest the Laziest and the Loudest pets am the famous Newmarket Citizens Band will give a concert at the at Wesley Brooks Conservation Area following the parade 11 am Beef is served at the Bayview Hills Community Association beef barbeque at Wesley Brooks Conservation Area am The canoe race starts up river from Rogers Reservoir on North Main St Noon to the Notre Dame Separate School band will give a concert at the Trading Fort on Timothy St 1 30 pm The canoe race is expected to finish at Fairy Lake All day the Newmarket Kinette Club will be selling ice cream sandwiches down by the carnival 1 to pm the Notre Dame Separate School band will give its second concert of the day again at the Trading Fort on Timothy St pm The Newmarket Horticultural Societys annual Iris Flower Show The show will be held in the main hall of the community centre and a feature will be a display of early Canadiana provided by the Newmarket Historical Committtee and Sharon Temple Museum 230 pm Pioneer skill competitions will start at Wesley Brooks Conservation Area pm St Andrews Presbyterian Church Strawberry Supper ham salads fresh strawberries and cake 8 pm Donkey baseball the Newmarket Civitan Club versus Rays fastballers at the Fairgrounds Park 8 pm Two dances at the Newmarket Community Centre The Newmarket Kinsmen Club will be filling the Community Arena with folks dancing to the sophisticated music of the Climax Jazz Band Tickets are available from club members or from any chartered bank in town The Bayview Hills Community Association will sponsor a dance in the main hall of the community centre Music will be by the Giovanelli Band and champion fiddler and square dance caller Tom of King City
