THE ERA York Count Sinn Phono Newmarket Charles St Phone Aurora DAVID HASKELL TERRY JOHN LOTT Editor BARRY WALLACE Newmarket needs community associations To idly benefit Iron the Newmarket recreation departments new community riH recreation program individual neigh to b in Newmarket need associations or at least some informal groupings In fact would be only one of many benefits of audi grass roots organizations The call for increased citizen participation in town affairs is one mat has been sounded many tunes before in Newmarket and of ten receives only a limited response It was one or the planks in Mayor Bob s first election platform for instance Daring the past three years his administration has endeavoured through public meetings whenever a change is being considered for an individual area to gather the views and comments of those effected Even these meetings met with limited sue cess however Atone the meeting to consider a new industrial park no one came At many of the others only people with axe to grind turned out Other town activities which started out as dozen projects have been taken over by the jj lapse The an Festival is a good example- Started by a citizens committee it is now run by the recreation department schools could become the instrument of changt needed to develop active community par ticipation groups loud in their criticism and have succeeded in a recommendation that it be rerouted If this happens Hydro will be left wide swatch of land through Newmarket and a 100- Council insisted that Hydro guarantee the rightofway be made available for recreational uses particularly and with the purchase the Bailey property on by the South Lake And perhaps people who play together will work together when the need arises For instance the towns new official plan a land use scheme which will to a large extent determine how Newmarket will grow during the next years will be unveiled soon This is the stage at which the plan needs input from the public Community associations are the logical groups to do this Another area where Newmarket has been conspicuous by its absence has been at the hearings into the location of Ontario Hydros new power corridor Opponents from King and other Conservatio Area has been acquired into the Hydro way A third area that Newmarket citizens especially commuters may soon wish they had spoken up about centres around the future of St York Region wants to develop as a fourland highway to Highway but a few King Township property owners are organizing an opposition lobby the King estate owners succeed in keeping rural road it will be the Newmarket commuters who will pay the price Sen Cooks name may be on next years ballot The man who never campaigned says hed have torange a few things if he runs for council in the next election He is Seneca Cook and until first ever election loss in 1971 he served on Newm council for 13 years Sen as hes af fectionately known says he never actively campaigned during any of the elections from 1958 on Never had a campaign sign printed he said as he remembered his council years but things were different then When I was first elected the town was much smaller It wasnt necessary to get out changed and I dont know half the people in town Sen who turned yesterday keeps himself abreast of all the political action and hasnt definitely ruled out another shot at town council Meanwhile he stays busy in his job as a president of the club in and zone chairman quality control inspector with S E Woods and as a member of the Newmarket Lions Club Sen and his wife Nellie celebrated their anniversary on Monday and they both spend a lot of time puttering around the lawns and gardens of their Avenue home They met following a meeting of the then popular Newmarket Ski Club We had about 100 members at one time remembers Sen and used to meet in a clubhouse out in the Gtenville hills The club only lasted for a few years but it was long enough for the Cooks to meet Seneca is a product of the Newmarket public and high school system having moved here with his parents at the age of two from his birthplace in Ive always loved the town and that was my main reason for getting into politics he says you want to do anything you can to help the town Sen has also found other ways in which to help Newmarket He served on the volunteer fire force for 14 years four of those as Captain and is now in his year of service with the lions Club He was He left the force in to enter politics and served almost from the beginning on the committee which dealt with the police and fire departments Newmarkets police department nuw defunct under regional government gave Sen some of his proudest moments during his council term They were known all over York County as the top force he says and our committee he was chairman for years was proud of the co operation we received from the police Does Seneca Cook miss working on council You never stop wanting to help the town to do your part Thats why I might Just run next time Would be like to work as an appointee with council liaison Id like that very much but in the meantime Ive still got my work with the In discussing their anniversary Nellie said I never buy him a present I tell him hes got me The Cooks are happy people and Sen thinks the Lions are helping the town Doing their part But dont bet that Cook Seneca wont appear on that next municipal ballot Put your money on the Lame Limper John lot Ronnie edits a newspaper which oc- Aurora Last week through the medium of his little periodical he challenged me to a of a side show to this Saturday s main event the AuroraNewmarket Family Life Centre Belying that old saw about hardnosed toughminded Ron got himself thoroughly conned at a wine and cheese part by Ralph who chairs the family life centres board of directors Ralph was looking for wellknown people to each other as a gimmick to spark support for the Ron presumed that he was or is wellknown He knew I was So he put Ralph onto the idea that Ronnie and Johnnie should stage their own personal endurance warn Ron with my customary humility that I am no tenderfoot For example I once ran a mile And hit 476 as an allstar baseball catcher And scored 31 points in basketball game And if you bring up the fact that all those things happened years ago youre a picker of Wallace of course has had his own glory days I must admit that Im no match for his prowess in the hockey rink Why once I saw him shut out the NHL allstars for all of 30 seconds while playing the nets for the Aurora Church Im also told that Ron once outran an Aurora fire truck with three cameras and a flask of hanging around his scrawny neck All those feats pale before my ac complishments many of which will go unrecorded here because of modesty and space Newmarket to Aurora and back via Prospect Wellington and Bathurst Sis and Mulock Sideroad My guess is that Ron will stop at the red light at Prospect St and forget to move when it turns green Hes already optimistic about making it at least to Aurora But I bear hes planning a detour via several St watering holes Something about the spirits of rejuvenation he was heard to mumble So its Wallace the Wingy Walker vs the Lame Limper according to the propaganda point at the family life centre and theyre running short of funds If youd like to Join the newpaper dingbats and various lesser celebrities call the centre at or go in and get a sponsor form The centre also is taking bets pledges on the Walker and the Lame Limper Lame Limper indeed When the dust clears Saturday well hear Ron Wallace repeat the food in plastic High prices and inflation have done a deal of harm to people especially those on limited Incomes but the one good thing hat has come from this problem is the opening- up of people Everyone wants to help others beat this difficulty thai is all of us IfMetermangoes can Main Street be far behind By Roy Green Falter than a ticking mats More than a herd of only a short step Besides Main St is a taw even ticket writer is needed to keep- the area from bogging down in traffic The street is too narrow and people and parked care merely make the situation worse Council at least same members recognise this and along with some are trying to find ways to keep the area alive Along with physical problems Main St also faces the opening of the new enclosed shopping mall next spring with great Some f eas are already trying to form an association to cope with lire problems One suggestion of course la a possible permanent mall in the area Take All the cars
