through Newmarket to the NHL wars down through he years With their arrival on and departure from the NHL scene one can trace a progression of the league in with Toronto Maple Leafs His Bill Thorns During his stay with the then highflving Maple Leafs Thorns played on three Stanley Cup victors and made the NHL second allstars club once during his stay in the league His first few years with the Leafs saw him centre the line of and Frank Finnegan and act as pivot at various times for Kid Line wingers Charlie Coriacher and Harvey Biisher Jackson One of the best centres in the game he tied for second in scoring in 1936 for the Canadian Division of the NHL with Charlie His best year was in 1938 when he centred Pep Kelly and Buzz Boll and played on his third Stanley Cup club TIME OF CHANGE His tenure in the league was at a time of flux as Ottawa senators St Louis Eagles Montreal Maroons and New York Americans followed and example set by Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Quakers by leaving the NHL scene During this time the penalty- shot was instituted and the flooding of the ice between periods was made mandatory Thorns joined the Leafs in 193233 and stayed with the club until 193839 when he was dealt to the Chicago Black Hawks for Doc His stay with the Hawks saw him lead the club twice in scoring and 194142 He stayed with the team until 1944 miss ing part of the campaign The next season he was dealt to the Boston Bruins where he stayed for one year before retiring During these years another Newmarket resident shot into the league Herbert Cain The husky 180 pound left winger made the NHL in 193334 led the league in scoring in 19344 and made the second all- star team the same year STANLEY CUP TEAM His second year with Maroons Cain played on a Stanley Cup champion This cup It must be remembered that mo these men played at a time when mone and the Depression of the thirtys dwindled and eventually faded into With the opening of the hockey campaign the first of consecutive shutouts Its interesting to note that when Cain and Toe Blake played senior with Hamilton Tigers in Eddie Gerard coach of the Maroons came down to scout Blake but went back to Montreal LEADER In Cain led the league in scoring and surpassed Wiellands record while getting only two minor penalties on the sea son During the 194445 playoffs he bagged five goals in seven games and in 1946 his final season he became a member of the select goals club netting 204 goals In the early years the league the sweater designated whether a player slept in the upper or lower berth on the train A
