UK Era Wet November THE ERA Serving York County Since DAVID HASKELL CARTER DONALD JOHN Resist school lot levy York County residents and the municipal councillors who represent them should resist any attempt by the county board of education to impose an lot levy on the construction of new homes The board of education wants this lot levy to pay for new school construction The issue arose last week when the board held approval of the next phase of the Ladyfield subdivision located north of Davis Dr until it received the What this new board policy means is this EVERY new home built in York County will now have an extra tacked on its purchase price It means that the home buyer will be paying interest on the for the term of his mortgage This will result in the new home buyer paying thousands of dollars more in interest charges It also means that the assessed value of his home will increase by This will result in the homeowner paying many thousands of dollars in extra taxes over the years The board wants to impose this lot levy on new homes so that new schools in new subdivisions will be paid for by the new home buyer In Other words the school board is attempting to pay for new school construction by taking the money out of its bank account and paying for it without having to borrow the money York County school board trustees are either living in a dream world or living in the past How many of our municipalities are able to write a for municipal improvements and not have How many of our readers are able to buy a home a car a TV set by writing a cheque these days How many of us borrow the money York County Board of Education trustees should stick jobs educating our children They should not stick their noses into residential devel- but leave that to the people who were because Auroras supplier of electricity Ontario Hydro will the town an average of seven per cent at the first of the year Aurora commissioners feel it will be unfair to the rates again since it did so only last August As a result when the Ontario Hydro rate increase goes into effect Auroras Hydro Commission will be operating in the By not raising its rates s mean that the inevitable rate business operates in the red it mt everyone knows it costs money to Equipment purchases and modernization schemes postponed when a business is in a shaky financial position Post poning these could cost hydro borrow money to money Scott Young Ill never forget before on the morning of up for maybe an hour lucky chance I anyone else at our house on the mcmbraiice Day and When I turned on the radio low the song being sung was When The Lights Co On Again All Over The World Later while I was making coffee another voice was singing Therell he bluebirds over the while cliffs of Dover tomorrow just you wait and see And still later when I went to the window and looked out into the beautiful morn ing the song was Sad gongs Why sad Well they are always saddest for me on a beautiful Remem brance Day and this one was beautiful In the field below our house the weeds were frosty and glittering in the new sun a dead dullwhite where shaded A plummeted through the air and beyond it southeast over the woods toward the lake the sky was clear and blue I didnt lose any relatives in war A few friends Many acquaintances But all the ones I knew who are so long gone now had known and sung these songs Smiley I have just got home from something as rare and delightful as a personally conducted lour of a teachers staff that lasted only half an hour This is iiivilciit to building the Pyramids in three The songs are sad because even dur ing the war when we were all up singing them in England pubs we knew that many would nt live to see the bluebirds or the or the lights when they went on again or their own private and personal the quick and lovely girls of then who now are mostly mid dleaged In the last few minutes before eight oclock that morning a man on the radio gave a moving reading of the poem In Flanders Fields I liked listening to it alone I was glad that there were no young sters around to ask why I was listening and ask why Ilui the radio dial usually sits This is because I have no desire to harangue anyone especially the young on what the- means to me The truth is that Remembrance Day is for adults only as was Armistice Day when I was young and did not know either Maybe some day if there is no more war Remembrance Day will cease to have mean ing at all to anyone Meanwhile to those of us in our fifties or more the day has meaning in memories and always will Memory of a sandyhaired and stocky young man who was always laughing when I knew him and wasnt a very good Spitfire pilot his squadronmates told me Rut he died flying Memory of other men who arent around to see the sun hit the frosty weeds or the first snow on a beautiful November morning be cause of the 88 they didnt hear coming the tracer that for once didnt conform to the optical illusion of bending upward and overhead the drone in the night of aircraft that werent ours A little snow thai fell a few days ago and melted fast in the towns and cities near our place stayed white on some of the shaded spots in the ditches and fields On the night before Remembrance Day as we drove home at midnight the sky was bright and clear and the white fields were still and quiet outlined by the fences A rabbit was crouched by the wood pile as we came up the lane And when the sun came up the next morning all of this that is so beautiful to the liv ing made me think of the people 1 knew who are long dead and far away This in turn made all the songs seem sad to me schedules are maintained This Is under standable since a bus can only go as fast as an al ready clogged highway al lows Is there any not Who can
