Cook Rumble named to York police commission rewarded with seats on the York Po lice Board which will assume the task of forming an amalgamated police force for the Region of York King Township Reeve Gordon Cook and Markham Township Reeve Stewart Rumble were appointed last week by the provincial Lieutenant Go vernor in Council The announcement was made last Saturday evening at the final County wardens banquet in Tor- Mr Rumble was warden in 1969 Their appointments put the last three war dens in the new regional administra tion Garfield Wright the war den is the regional chairman The York Police Board tech nically the York Regional Board of Commissioners of Police is a five- man body that must be filled by Nov 1 board consists of a county judge an other provincial appointee and two members of the regional council Councils two representatives will likely be chosen at tomorrows regional council meeting Mr Cook said he was looking forward very much to working with Stewart Rumble in the challenging task of forming the regional police Salaries for the nonelected mem bers of the board have not been de termined Provincial legislation calls for Yorks appointed police commis sioners to receive no less than per year as prescribed by the Police Act lor a municipality with a popula tion between 100000 and Under regional government Yorks 1971 population will be ap proximately 151000 But it is likely Reeves Cook and Rumble will receive salaries substan tially greater than The legisla tion creating the Region of York makes no provision for deciding on specific salaries for police merchants will ask the Newmarket Planning Board to include a yearround mall for the area in the towns official plan This was decided at meeting of nearly merchants held last week to decide the fate of Main St The decision to ask for a year- round mall was unanimous The meeting was chaired by Ron and the group named Newmarket Downtown Mall Jack Groves as chairman Laird Ruby was named treasurer and place for the children to visit the jolly gentleman Until permanent mall arrangements completed the mer chants plan to emulate the successful mall held in conjunction with the newlyrenovated arena celebrations held earlier this month Main St will be closed for a mall in conjunction with the annual Winter Carnival held at Fairy Lake Another mall will be sometime early in the spring Merchants plan no July celebrations but will hold events to promote Main St and Fairy Lake in late June Police may lay charges in church breakins NEWMARKET Charges ire pending against four juveniles and one 10yearold who allegedly broke into at least seven area churches and several businesses over the past months At least 16 charges of break enter and theft will be laid against the youths this week Newmarket Po lice said Money was stolen in most of the cases The breakins include Three at Trinity United Church one at the Salvation Army Citadel two at the Christian Baptist Church one at the
