here I am my friends with the de lightful assignment this week of telling all I know about the recently elected members of the new York Regional Council One of the notsoapparent things about local politics is that each man stands in cold and lonely isolation There is no party ban ner to huddle behind for protection Personal loy alties are nonexistent No quarter is asked or given It is in that context that the following ob servations are made Tony Roman the new Mayor of young aggressive and with old methods and people who cant hack it all the way on their own James Jongeneel young alert eager and pleasant Hes a stock broker A morning spent at a council meeting can cost him as much as Hes in politics because he likes it Harold a quiet gentle man Probably without an enemy Never did hear Hy open mouth at a county council meeting Garnet Williams Mayor of has a fantastic repertoire of country music and plays a mean guitar Rutherford another old hand Competent and a very likeable guy Speaks only when he has something to say but speaks loud and clear Hill Mayor of Richmond Hill has no idea how lo control a public meeting and doesnt even seem to be aware of the need Pro bably a very competent druggist Don logical clearminded speaks like a lawyer addressing the bench He is a lawyer Has a keen sense of humor but seldom gets isnionate Looks on politics as a fun thing Says he couldnt stand it otherwise RICHMOND HILL councillors argued briefly a minor disagreement among several councillors over press coverage Press representa tives turned out for last weeks meeting held in the regions temporary head quarters at the Toronto and York Roads Commission on Don Mills Road Reporters were granted brief admit tance about minutes af ter the meeting started to take photographs of the new council Regional Chair- man Garfield at first declined to answer re porters questions explain While the inter view proceeded however Mayor Dick of Aurora and several other Mayor slat ed flatly that the press should be admitted since public business was being transacted Two of his fel low councillors disagreed The debate had flared for only about 30 seconds when administrative officer Jack closed the door to press representatives There is nothing to be presented here today that wont be voted on in open council Chairman Wright told reporters in his office There are seven new members nine of the 16 sit on the York Co unty Council and were just bringing them up to This meeting is just to let the members know what to expect at the inaugural meeting said Chairman Wright Theyre not legally ship are unknown to me as yet And finally theres Wright the regional chairman is a big bluff hearty man who is fond of sneaking in cliches He got the job because he lobbied for three years and because nobody else around at the time wanted It that badly has made a couple of mistakes already the most recent being the comment that the new boyg will have to learn There were storm clouds before he said that He has one deadly enemy in his new council The sole reason for enmity being the coveting of the job of chair- It will be an interesting exercise for readers to scrutinize the news reports from the regional council to see If you can spot the villain who coveted s job job in this space from now on is to try and make these people and regional govern ment come alive to fill in and color the
