The Era Newmarket Aurora Keswick Out Wed October lUt Spring flowering bulbs pay for care By Wart- Its good time to review dairy herd handling as the switch over to barn feeding occurs often upset things and its hard to keep milk up Feeding deserves to be checked out carefully and we are learning bow to do it better all the time Protein and energy levels can be figures out with information available at our office A dairy roan could spend an afternoon very profitably at this especially if it is raining and cold Grain feeding may have to be changed a lot this year to allow for some badly weathered hay Getting a bigger income is the name of the game in farming John Kudellka at Glenville made the point well when he commented not long ago that if he could get an extra pound of milk at each milking from all the cows in th Glenville herd the extra income would buy a new Cadillac in one year Harold Clapp one of our dairy specialists has it figured out that a cow milking 14000 pounds earns twice as much as a cow putting up 12000 pounds And we usually think of a pounder as being fairly honest Still thinking of money there is one item on the milk statements these days that could be trouble for a few herds Its the amount of the penalty on quality that would have been taken off if the penalty program was actually in force Again its a good time to bear down on that problem Help with some answers can come from George Jackson our dairy specialist The mastitis control program dairy and the York County Milk Committee support anyone in the effort too The road to an extra pound of milk at each milking or from 12000 to 14000 pounds is not all that easy But it is an exciting trip for a dairyman who likes money VALK ON VEGETABLES mv By Matthew Fruit and Vegetable Extension look forward to many more years of fruitful research under his direction The research sta tion at Highway has ac The quality of the tulips daffodils hyacinths and other spring flowering bums has never been bet ter than this years crop That being the case this is a particularly good year to try your hand at forcing them into bloom indoors during January and Febru ary force into Dowering because the blooms are already for med inside the bulb when you get them from your bulb dealer Forcing does nt mean that you use high temperatures to obtain the flowering well ahead of the normal Dowering season out in the garden What we really do is to give them the same cold temperature treatment in the beginning to allow them to form their roots and then we give them spring temperatures well in advance of norm al to bring on the foliage and flowers Its important to remember not all of the spring flowering bulbs will force well indoors so its a good plan to cheek your bulb catalogue care fully and select only those marked suitable for this purpose Such bulbs must be of top quality and must be round and plump At this time of the year your bulb dealer will no doubt have some good buys be cause the planting time is drawing to a close lower grower does it with the bulbs receiving no set back whatsoever because of the transplanting When planting your bulbs in a clay bulb pan you cover the drainage hole with several pieces of broken clay pot to ensure adequate drainage Next co ver the broken pieces with peat moss compost or some other form of humus that is one inch in depth Then place enough of the soil mixture in the pot so that when the bulbs are set in place their tips will be about one inch below the top of the pot Fill in eno ugh soil around the bulbs and firm so that the tips are just visible above the surface of the soil The bulbs should be set fairly close together but make sure they dont touch each other Half an inch apart would be the correct dis tance In firming pack the soil well around the bulbs to make sure there is no airspace left Once the potting up is finished be sure and mark each pan as to the In The Garden By John BradshawMm color and variety Then give them a good soaking with water at room temperature I found that the best way to do this is to stand the pots in a partially filled sink pall or pan until the surface of the soil becomes completely moist bulbs must have a period in darkness and cold so that they can develop the strong root system before top growth is started Here is the point where the aver age person makes the big gest mistake He is so im patient to see results that he doesnt leave the bulbs in the cold and the dark for a long enough period Ten period before you can safe ly bring most of the bulbs into the light I have found that the easiest way to do this is to dig a trench out in a welldrained part of the gar den or in a cold frame where there is no danger of water collecting Make the trench inches deep and IS inches wide Set the bulb pans side by side in the bottom with the rims tou ching and in the order in which you want to take them out At the same time make a listing of this order so that you will not have to open the whole trench ev ery time you wish to re move a few pots Around each pan pack damp peat form of humus Then cov er with a 12incb layer of dead leaves straw or hay Weigh this down with some rough boards or ever green branches This pre vents the pots from being frozen so solidly in the humus that you would have difficulty in removing them After leaving them in the trench for a of the pots If temperature by setting the the night pots in a partiallyfilled temperature no higher than green which usually hap pens in about 10 days time the bulb pans in your window Very high temperatures will produce weak sickly blooms CALLED FOR AMD DELIVERED No Extra Charge BEST DRUG STORE the starting it of the the bottom of the pot you can safely take two or three of them Its important to first of all place them in a cool light but not sunny place A north window is a good lo- 1 Fertilizer recommenda tions are based on work done there and these re commendations are being updated continuously minor element deficienices such as Magnesium Boron Copper and Manganese were detected and remedies for them were found 3 Painstaking variety trial work has given us first of all the Autumn Spice onion and more than onion varieties are under obser vation again this year to make sure that we dont miss anything that may give us a better yield or better quality Keep up the good work Conny and which is the problem of various carrot defects such as black spots skin cracks and rusty roots It is very frustrating not to know what is causing these diseases We must look at all possible causes such as fungi a virus deficien cies of major and minor el ements or perhaps suitable containers and the correct soil mixture Best results are always obtained by growing the bulbs in soil in clay flower pots or bulb pans Hyacinths are the exception and can be grown in either soil or water Id recommend that you grow most of your hyacinths in soil and just try a few bubs in the spec ial glass containers using The ideal soil mixture for forcing would consist of equal parts of top soil humus and sand One of the commercial African violet soil mixtures would also be satisfactory Home gardeners who wish to force in quan tity can set Die bulbs in deep wooden flats give them the necessary period in the dark and cold tem perature and then move them to any desired con tainer when the buds first start to
