Newmarket- Aurora Keswick Ont Wed August 19 1970 THE ERA Serving York County Since DAVID HASKELL TERRY CARTER A better way When Newmarket council purchased the derelict Newmarket Motors building on St the main argu ment put forward by supporters of the move was that it gave the town control of a key parcel of downtown teal estate In fact the purchase gave the town a twoblock long parcel parallel to Main St Mayor Tom who initialed the purchase proposed that the town build a new town hall on the Motors building site seek private capital to develop the balance of the parcel as a shopping mall The idea is a sound one and revenue from the private developments if they were properly planned could well have paid for the muchneeded town hall after the Main St municipal offices were sold However this concept seems to have died for lack of a strong voice to push it Last week a majority of town councillors supported a plan to the Newmarket Motors building for apartments with stores on the streetlevel floor The council committee refused to discuss the whole town- owned parcel They had before them one plan a ninestorey structure with one level of stores how such a large building on acres could be the attrac- wn area which would attract yet this was why the town The town has bought for this land Coun cil therefore has an obligation to explore alternatives in order to make the best use possible of it The mayors proposal to seek private capital to develop a two or three block long shopp ing mall to compliment Main St with or without a town hall deserves to be one of these alternatives If private developers can find financing for subdi visions shopping centres in thi3 area surely the town too Our own festival hard such a small site little type of asset to the more redevelopment capital bought the property Three cheers for the recreation committee It has started plans rolling for an annua festival or carnival to replace the longdefunct Newmarket Lions Car nival and tho oven longerdefunct Newmarket Fair As the county seat and soon the seat of regional government Newmarket shouldnt allow its little neighbor to the south to outshine it as it has done these past two years with its July birthday party However as The Era has commented on number of occasions when it advocated the organization of just such an annual festivity this does not preclude the possibility of joining with Aurora for one giant twotown July 1 birthday celebration sty son We hope the new committee when it gets around tended he Newmarket to choosing a date for its annual event will choose July 1 and realtor department day helped make this camp pos- choose to coordinate its efforts with those of Aurora camp this past week and and especially to the ON YOUR RIGHT THE OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF HER MAJESTYS OPPOSITION THE RIGHT HONORABLE AH YOU KNOW WHATS HIS NAME HUH Scott Young a grave in the corral Anybody who owns animals of any kind knows how happy they can make you and occasionally how sad We felt both emotions over one engaging little character inside a very short period of time nine days this summer The prime happiness for me came a couple of days Id been a a long rip While i out the water It toward little popla pi nig fed pool have which foal i working at Lake monev to help her That means we we the fall to The i for the s back to school i charge the further factor that we the foal Anyway all the time I legs tottered the her forehead I had some tools in my hand I just dropped them where I stood and to the house a couple of hundred yards away to smaller daughter 5 hoping that the foal wouldnt be born until got back I flew in on a Sunday night My wife met me at the airport and we drove to the farm Next morning first thing I went down and had a look at the mare and thought by the size of her that the foaling still three weeks away That show how much I know The next morning when I went down I got the surprise of my life At first I couldnt see the horses at all There had been a hard rain about am so I went over to a little shed Id just put a new roof on and checked inside to make sure it was keep- sound The mare had managed the birth per fectly on flat place on hillside that I found a halfhour later That day was spent getting the mare and foal out of that field into a corral where wed been saving good grass for just this event From then on few hours of every day centred around the with the little filly getting stronger kicked her sat idly all afternoon watching her and having a cool drink or In my mind I could see her and our younger daughter eight growing up together one learning to ride and the other learning to be ridden We called her Star Then on the day that she was nine days old a beautiful evening with no clouds in the sky and the soft country silence all around a friend of mine dropped by the corral and the little filly was down panting but not moving up the hill otherwise He called me immediately Within minutes the vet was on his way too Wed had her inoculated a few hours after birth so thnt illnesses that sometimes hit foals had been count ered as well as any man can do When we got the frantic mare tied up and the vet had a good look he just shook his head The little fillys neck was broken from marks around and above her right eye where the bone was broken the only thing he could assume he said was that the mare had three leaders alter them At this time when so many of us arc ready to condemn our teenagers tor their behaviour It is en- to sec he good and tamer She would come up and tentatively sniff my fingers and taste them and then shed toss her head canter away nickering and having a great time On the first Sunday she r friends dropped in to see under a shade tree near t Nothing else no fall while running or jumping could possibly explain the fractur ed skull and he broken neck It was a sad evening a sad burial party by the light of a flashlight there in the corral So many hopes had been nurtured in those nine fine days were to be the only ones that frolicking little Star would ever know Bill Smiley sugar and spice This summer feel distinctly that fall malicious witch or warlock has put me Dont ask me why I aint done nobody Theres been nothing I wouldnt the i tragic Just a lot of little things that seem to wind up spelling hex Why for example should there he huge wasps nest in the middle of hedge when the filthy little brutes have never built there before Why should I trip over a rock take a chunk the size of a silver dollar out of my shin and thumb lijmg to myself In should lino suddenly leap from SI to a snug Why should my dan- But its not just what happened to I seem to be carrying the spell around with me and am beginning to feel like a Jonah Went to a delightful party Every one was pleasant that a couple of 200- jmunders wound up in a state of deep umbrage Thats a sort of purple One had told the other dm a discussion of exercise jogging and waistlines that he was just a big fat pig Not Hut why was I the only male left to keep them from coming to carnage All 140 pounds of me Went sailing with friends on a perfect john justifiably It market for quite a while great upsurge these things go will be shown of them nearly made a nifty catch beyond the wire With hundreds of Newmarket kids involved in ykc and programs it seems the wii should plan to budget erect lights on tair- The confines of the that old bugaboo sorb was the top icing if the fourth elded to call the game be cause of darkness Because five inning light a because the light for baseball must be higher than for that championship visiting fans was thinking wishfully the other day Newmarket has the play ball and the adults who are willing and capable of running an excellent baseball program If the program is to expand to serve more boys lights are like to have People who work And niltS CI Mil- Newmarket In last weeks A HANK ho- day I usually dont gel any There are long lineups at Ihe two tellers cages thai arc open 1vo complained to the teller Hooray for A Graves Newmarket Its about time com plained about the terrible treatment some banks stores give their customers Who have to shop during People who work their lunch hours Crier The mysterious closing The premature closing of a dropin centre one would suppose is always good for a story But not so the closing of the Newmarket dropin centre I found it begin with the ambiguity of the statement by the adult staff of the centre that political pressure was the cause of the closing aroused my curiosity I tried to check it out The the arid winning with a crewman who doesnt know a luff from a larboard But he also didnt figure on winding up two miles behind every other boat including one he beats regularly We hit every patch of dead calm in the bay while the other boats invariably caught a breeze which would vanish by the time we got there Why Another friend invited me for a days fishing Came the day ideal for fishing Came a phono call saying hed put a rod through his crankshaft or something equally horrible and his motor was ruined You think that was just coincidence The other night I did go fishing with my brotherinlaw Good boat good motor lots of worms and minnows perfect time of evening and a hot spot where hed picked up some nice bass the day before I dont have to tell you what we caught About four pounds of weeds while a chap in the next boat hauled in a lunker Last night we went out to visit anoth er brotherinlaw Theyd taken a cottage to get away from the terrible heat of the city for a week That brief visit fixed him Today It a sweaters and long pants weather with a howling wind and the temperature down about forty de grees Theyll have a miserable week thanks to These an a catalogue as long a ing to think that whom the gods would destroy they first make mad And Im getting mad I can put up with my normal stupidity Like a from the revenue people for a fine Or going out to put our suitcases in the trunk of the car and finding it full of elm blocks for the fireplace which my fatherinlaw had giv en me last spring and having to unload them in the heat and my brand new sport shirt Or hav ing the cat claw me about the head and shoulders on three separate occasions because she doesnt like driving in a car That was my wifes stupid ity But I cant help feeling that theres something sinister some kind of a trend in all the other little accidents Somebody out there is trying to get me Today Im convinced of it Woke up with violent stomach cramps that turn me into a white sweating wretch about every twenty minutes Ate and drank the same things last night as the others in the house Why should I be the only one to wind up with dire rear Why councillor were out of town and would not be back until August Deputy Reeve Bruce Eves said he had no idea what the political pres sure might bo but added that the police had closed the centre because of drugpushing and because there had been a fire in the building The fire turned out to be a minor thing a smouldering chesterfield Police Constable Tom Young who has been closely associated with the centre since it opened told me that as far as he knew there had been no such charges and that the police had no reason to close the place Police Chief Bill Hill confirmed this saying If there had been any com plaints of drug pushing there cer tainly would have been charges laid and there were none Dr John who started the dropin centre in the first place called the drugpushing allegation utter nonsense He said he had predicted an very pi had been made both at the centre and at the crisis centre on Davis Drive I will have more on this later as I have arranged with Dr to spend some time at the crisis centre with a view to writing a series of articles on the progress being made Among the youngsters 1 talked with opinions wore divided While some bemoaned the sudden demise of their tempo rary haven others seemed glad about the closing saying that it wasnt really what theyd expected it to be As one young lady put it The sight of it turned me off Never the less I believe its a mistake to leave the youngsters without a place to gather As Dr pointed out a youth centre is the responsibility of the commu nity I agree But as long as we have those members of the commu nity who expect such youth centres to mould the kids into cleancut Canadian boys and girls with neatly- groomed hair and morals to match Im afraid we may be in for a spell of dropin centres that will open and close with the frequency of a coquettes eyelashes I have come to the conclusion that all future candidates in muni cipal elections should be categorized By that I mean that it would be prudent of voters to exclude from their choice of candidates such types as i A might be available for council ivty during the daytime The thing that nudged me to this conclusion was the action of East Council a couple 1111 the appoint- ment of retired councillor Jack to fill the void left when Garfield Wright was made chairman of the Region of York a delegation school teacher Randy La who was fourth in last years election losing by only votes made it known to council that it would appear at the regular meet- of council and seek permission to be heard on Mr Lactones be- J half The meeting was to have Monday el that it would be the the day This writ signed by the the members of thej during had been as- Suspecting that there might be a change of plan I had of my spies phone the pal office to confirm the time of the meeting She was told that meeting had taken place at Now whether this change was made to avoid meeting the delegation or not I havent been able to tain but no matter what the excuse I believe the voters deserve the to attend council meetings if they so desire Unfortunately there nothing in the municipal act to pre- vent council from having a regular meeting in the afternoon However rather than deprive the public of their right to attend regular tugs most other municipalities them in the evenings that municipalities that have nothing to I hide
