Cohoe salmon would cure Simcoe smelt invasion Dales NEWMARKET A man who has fished Lake Simcoe for years warns that fishing will end soon unless the smelt population is elim inated And the best way to changed his mind after consulting with officials of his depart- cure might be worse than the disease said Mr Mr theory is based on the fact that the Cohoe has a huge appetite and cats nothing but small are already in Lake Simcoe They contend the number of t now in the lake has not curtail ed fins Mr Before the smelt were so num erous five years ago we would five small for every large one Now its a rarity to catch a small whitefish Mr Dales said the Lands and Forests decision was bureaucracy at work again They said smelt isnt harming the fishing and to admit that they are now would mean they are making fools of themselves Mr Dales challenged Lands and Forests to place some smelt in a tank along with some small whitefish and lake trout They would then see just how fast he smell ate the smaller fish He called on all anglers and hunters groups to poll their member ship to sec how the catches were this past winter This would show he said that fishing is down from previous years He added that fishing over the past 20 years had been consistently good until the smelt about fie He contended that the smelt was Ihe Cohoes natural food The smelt because they are so numerous would be eaten by the Cohoe before any other fish he said like the smelt They are also a cold waler fish and would not eat the younger bass and lake trout which arc born on the warm shoals The fact that nobody is catching small is definite proof that smelt arc killing the popu lation he claims This decline in whitefish is go ing to make Lake ice fish hut operators suffer badly as white- fish is the prime winter catch These men have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in their industry As well as restoring Lake Sim to what it was before tho arrival of Hie smelt the introduction of Cohoe would
