THE ERA WED JUNE 1970 VOL NO Editorials Instant park An instant park was born In East over the weekend The park was created through Ihe efforts of a group of Iotin Ave area parents Faced with their children playing on busy every day and seeing a vacant field glaring them in face every day the parents decided to lake some action Instead of a vacant field theres now a complete Willi swings and sandboxes And the children have sonic place oilier than the streets to play on The thoughtful hardworking parents are be commended for this project and it is hoped that similar neighborhood parkclles will spring up soon now that the summer holidays are approaching The arena problem The critical arena problem faced last spring by Hast Township Council now must be solved by Newmarket Council and it must be solved within the next few weeks if hundreds of children living north of Davis Dr are to have ice next winter East Gwillimbury planned to build an arena to accommodate them on the Mount Albert road and planned to have it ready next fall Accordingly the East Gwillimbury hockey groups have relin quished the ice time in other arenas that they used last year Now the township finds it cant build the new arena for which land is already purchased without help from Newmarket because per cent of its population and assessment is being annexed by the town Newmarket Council has refused help but said it wilt consider building a second arena within the new town boundaries However if town council already tightly strapped for funds is able to buy land plan an arena and build it before next winter it will have moved faster than it has ever done before shorter We hope it SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Lets have some service I have no sympathy for any one except the public Mail service in this country has gone backwards about years in the past two or three years Costs have steadily increas ed and service has steadily decreas ed until we have reached the point where many people would welcome the return of the pony express rid ers who used to carry he mail thro ugh dust and storm and hostile In dians it is a government monopoly it is huge sprawling and utterly inefficient in a modern soc iety No enterprising private busi ness would put up with the incredible of the present postal sys tem If it did the public would soon put it out of business Its rather a paradox to note that the liquor stores which used to operate on a fiveday week are now open six days plus Friday evenings while postal service has been cut to five days and post offices close earl ier Apparently theres more profit in booze than public utilities for gov ernment And thats what the postal service is or should be a public utility Wouldnt we he in a fine state if hydro power and the telephone service and police and fire protection were lopped off on Friday to recom- Monday or Tuesday if there were a Federal holiday The people have benefited from Mr Kie efficient postal service a the tele- phone and telegraph They are reaping a harvest cause big has practically stopped us the mails Whats the point of posting an important letter on Wednesday if you know it probably wont be delivered Friday and therefore will be delivered the following Monday or Tuesday if Mondays a holiday Its bad enough to drive a businessman to apoplexy but its just re personal basis to the ordinary citizen Our daughter lives in the city SO miles away She doesnt have a phone If we write her on Monday she gets the letter Thursday or Fri day If theres something urgent and mi theres no guar antee shell get it that week So send her a wire Sup pose shes not at home She doesnt get the telegram until next day or the next If I were lo drop dead she might find out about it a week after the funeral It wouldnt bother me in condition but it might upset her a bit Today I checked aL the local post office Three a day go out If I send a letter to my miles due west heres the proce dure It goes due east for miles then southwest for 200 miles south west then northwest for miles The shortest distance bet ween two points is a triangle in post- office math There is a goodsized town three miles away A letter sent from there can and usually does take two days lo get here You could walk it in lf minutes Paradoxically a col league of mine writes his mother in England and she gels the letter within hours If this is efficiency Im all turned around somehow Granted the postal workers were underpaid for years though Ill witness that they were not overs worked I was employed in a post office during tin Christmas rush and nobody was rushing that much Pay them a decent wage give them decent working conditions but lets have some blasted service If the PO runs at a loss pay it and the CNR are heavily subsidized and there arent tut Millions and mil lions are thrown down the drain on such flourishes as the aircraft car rier and shrugged off How about delivering the mail on lime THE Readers ERA Dear Editor I am attempting to trace of Hiram Harrison a member or a UEI family who came to York Township in I7ib from Nova Scotia and moved to an East farm in 1820 He married iii had five daugh ters Nancy Lucy Mary and Susan one son and possi bly two others Joshua and Joseph The names of the mother anil daugh ters as well as Joshua and Joseph appear in an old Sharon document as having contributed to the welfare of the Temple Hirams name appears many limes in account hook of a Sharon general store during the late 18t0 About this time the family seems to have bed from the dis trict although a Joshua Harrison was of East in apparently buried in would be satisfactory in all local Representation of all members lo the Regional Council should he decided by Ihe people not by the politicians This sugges tion was implemented last week and ippiopiiit- is 1ing pre pared Ed One or two local areas will have to be given an indirect form of monitory assistance Some areas of the being left with a large ii bile I think those two report lo proper TOM TAYLOR the old Pi Perhaps the appearance of letter in newspaper wilt turn up some trace of Hiram Harri sons descendants iossibly in the Albert area 1 would be pleased to hear from any one who might have a clue to this Dear Editor On May and again May the Province of Ontario out a master plan for Toronto an Central Ontario along with a spec fie plan for York County I would like lo express m complete endorsement of both reports They will provide ill The Regional Government report should consider three areas more closely before they are im plemented The number of members on eacli local council is stated at nine in the report I feel five concerned persons and ratepayers of East Township object to partial amalgama tion We feel it should be all or no- much needed close to reality until Re rnment set up boundaries lation and shattering hope ami dreams of over having these facilities If Regional Government must exist and must set up these boundaries please let them be extended in order that we may all benefit A Commu nity Centre cannot be a reality un less this Township is completely amalgamated with Newmarket or just left the way we were As you read this pleae und erstand not only are we concerned as ratepayers but also as parents We hope and prav that some good will come from all of this and that every man woman and child will Crier By BILL
