Highland Heights iains of a portion of this industrial land From previous ex perience I can say as the mayor that I find It very difficult to sell industrial land In this town yet we arc left without from to service this land purchased from feci there Is no such thing as a town where progress stands still We cither go ahead or fall backwards and to do nothing tosit pat Is to lose ell opposing the subdivis ion to offer some concrete alternative ways to Improve the towns financial condi tion Rather than be ing just critics perhaps they would come forward the town can acquire the services It needs without ties MAYOR total amalgamation and the prob lems this would Involve the possibility of Davis Dr re maining the boundary and the possibility of abandon ing regional government al together The very urgent need for an arena In East Gwillimbury was unani mously agreed upon and the meeting agreed this the Highland Heights division proposal Once a gain members of this council have rejected a written letter from the new town engineer stating that after exhaustive studies this new subdivision would not put undue strain on the ex isting facilities of the town The council at the same meeting voted to spend approximately for the acquisition of the industrial lands in the Towercrest subdivision said a strong lobby against the subdivision was at work prior to last weeks coun cil He said seve ral council members and at least one planning board member received telephone calls asking them to vote against the Highland Heights proposals or write- letters opposing them as was the case basis Aurora teetered be tween one and two seats with a population of in its expanded boundaries under the regional plan SUBDIVISION continued from page 1 port of the bylaw before vote was taken but afterwards both the mayor and reeve spoke Reeve Clare Salisbury who was chairing the hearing on the bylaw said I feel we have taken a step backwards as far as this town is con cerned he then told council He pointed out the subdivision agreement had been discussed and changed over a period of many months that both the present and former town engineers endorsed it as well as a num ber of other engineers consulted and that planning board and subdivision com mittee had supported it The reeve said the houses in the proposed subdivision would be assessed at an average over the towns breakeven point outside their subdi vision and he pointed out these would also service part of the indus trial land council had voted to purchase the same evening He also pointed out Edwards planned to start building a square foot factory as soon as the agreement was approved When everything Is hashed out with the Municipal Affairs department he said referring to regional govern ment I think we will need this type of industry The reeve finished by saying he saw no reason for continuing to have a special subdivision committee Forhan rebutted saying the spe cial subdivision committee which met on this subdivision consisted on the mayor the reeve and the deputy reeve and since He charged council has his representative present Im not knocking this subdivis ion but we have to decide whos call ing the tune said Mr Forhan Do we develop when were ready or when some developer is ready The mayor then gave the chair back to Reeve Salisbury so he Surgeon could speak streets in the older part of town he said The mayor said new subdivision houses pay about more in taxes than homes in the old part of town and re quire less servicing He pointed out Edwards has in dustrial land and must build factories on it or lose a bond he has posted with the i place to work said The mayor said this town stuck with its old arena and heavy penditures on old roads and services cause in the old days we did all
