sader for nil pollution legislation told his audience he is discouraged at the lack of sincerity in the adult attitude on pollution Dr Jones warned the students against the Idea that a one week campaign would be all that is required Dr Jones was the guest speaker at both a junior and senior student assembly as part of the week- long environmental pollution week sponsored by both elementary school students in Newmar ket Also at the meeting were rep resentatives of the Ontario Water Resources Commission Mayor Tom Reeve Clare Salisbury of Aurora and a student chorus from Notre Dame Towercrest NEWMARKET The town Is on the verge of closing a plus deal for about acres of industrial land and a parcel of parkland along the Cane Parkway ll was disclosed late last week Town Council has been trying to close the deal with Towercrest Develop ments Ltd the original developer of the subdivision since last fall It already has Ontario Municipal Board approval to bor row for the acres or Indus trial land A subdivision between Towercrest and the town signed over two years ago became the basis of the seven- month long dispute Town council claimed the agreement bound the firm to sell the iit lusti land either to the town or to an industrialist wishing to locate there fixed price firm interpreted it was only bound the fixed price It sold agreement offer to the town The firm has offered to sell all its industrial land ex cept acres plus a parcel of land along the Holland River zoned as open space to the town at 2500 an acre meeting and a new building facing has subsequently gone up there Council made a formal offer to purchase then turned he matter over to sell to industrialists behind closed doors made a second offer They would buy the industrial land at the agreed price but would only pay an acre for the park land At the same time they apparent ly indicated they would parcel to Ontario The package deal offered by Towercrest adds up to about acres more than the town originally counted on buying and so would add about 30000 to the price bringing It to about 130000 Towercrest turned down the sec ond offer but the firm said it would make mortgages available to the town so It could finance what It couldnt pay for The councillors ordered town of ficials to proceed on that basis and the terms of the agreement if any arc ex pected before a public meeting of coun cil this week Edwards subdivision hangs on one vote NEWMARKET Approval of the Edwards subdivision appar ently hangs on a single vote in Newmar ket Council this week An industrial street on which suggestion has ne ver been discussed in a public meeting of council Mr Edwards has told council if approval of the subdivision agreement is not forthcoming from council we are go ing to apply to the Ontario Municipal Board to fix the terms of the agreement GEORGINA POLICE ISSUE Charges unfounded says judge Ontario Police Commission said last Two former officers on the force Kenneth Bromley a veteran of 21 years on the Metro Toronto Police and James Davenport 33 charged last month Mr Bromley a probationary fired by Chief Leonard ivenport resigned in protest Judge Graham said Commission investigators found the Police department to be in pretty good shape He said the force did issue officers with baseball bats in cases of emergency such as attacks by dogs Mr Graham said all police were issued with standard billy clubs and the bats were merely for extra protection Judge Graham said the police were given a regular issue of bullets for their service revolvers Extra bullets above the regular supply may have purchased by some police officers for ex tra practice the judge explained All the allegations are generally Mr Graham said Town ship Reeve Ernie has since told the policemen they can have all the bul lets they want The judge also said the departments radio communication sys tem has been improved Its not too bad a force for its size However we were pleased to see that the department will be unified with the rest in York County to form one large force he said Judge Graham said there is no way Constables Bromley and Daven port will return to the police department unless council voles to take them back Reeve said last month that this would never happen BOUNDARY TALKS TODAY NEWMARKET Newmarket and East councils have been summoned to Queens Park today to dis cuss mutual boundary problems with Municipal Affairs Minister Darcy Keough Mr MeKeoughs twoweek old York Region report recommended that Newmarket annex the urban portion of East Township but
