THE ERA WED APRIL IB VOL 119 NO IB Editorials Sensible words Newmarket Planning Board member Ernie Sokol came up with some strong and sensible words at last weeks meeting between the board and council What in effect he said was Lets tell the developers where we want their development not lot them tell us where they want it He urged an immediate freeze of all land development within Newmarkets limits until a new and uptodate official plan has been drafted Mr Sokol a building contractor himself said that under the present system developers might get away without paying their fail- share of municipal services As an example he said older residents of the town might end up subsidizing new subdivisions after they are built because the town might find it has to spend money to improve services the older residents have already paid for once Mr words make sense For why should a homeowner pay higher taxes to pay for a larger sewer because there is a new subdivision up the street Why should an established homeowner have money tacked onto his tax bill because a new up the street means the road in front of his house will have to be resurfaced because of the extra traffic A homeowner should lie entitled to the same standard of munici pal services once be has paid for them and not be subjected to a tax increase just because some developer up the street wants to make a fast buck The problem can be solved by the adoption and strict adherence to a new official plan The present one is almost years old being constantly amended An official plan would bo greeted with delight by homeowners developers and real estate firms alike least they would know where they stand Council should give the planning board immediate approval and funds to go ahead with the drafting of an official plan SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Readers Dear Editor If Rene the Parti and separatists suc ceed it may mean the end of French culture in North America English Canada should cooperate if Quebec
