THE ERA WED MARCH 18 1970 VOL 110 NO Editorials Pollution solution I The Holland Valley Conservation Authoritys to extend its area of influence is an excellent one and should be proceeded with immediately In his annual report Authority chairman Lambert proposes to increase its influence to include the municipalities of Cnnlllngton Sutton Brock East and North Gwlllimbury Mariposa Reach Scott ami Whitchurch The important part of the proposal is that the Authoritys influence would cover municipalities touching on Lake Simcoo The Holland Valley Authority now covers the Holland Valley watershed encompassing the municipalities of Newmarket Aurora King Township and part of East Whitchurch and At present their is no single authority along the south cast and west shores of Lake that can control pollution of the lake or exercise water management Individual municipalities can and do control pollution and water management to a certain extend but independent of each other and with no overall plan A larger conservation authority governing all watersheds draining into Lake would also provide the financial ability to hire more quali fied technical people to provide pollution control and water management It will also provide a bigger clout to those who are polluting Lake Simcoe and stop the Green Slime from polluting its waters Pollution solution II The news that the Provincial Government may use the Aurora and Newmarket sewage treatment plants to experiment with a new lime process for removing phosphate pollutions is welcome Both plants are nearly at or at capacity and there is no indication their work loads will he less during the months to come The lime process has received preliminary tests and these indicate that it will successfully remove the Green Slime producing nutrients Since both plants are at or near capacity it makes sense to conduct lime process tests at them After all we have nothing to lose if it doesnt work we have the same horrible Green Slime pollution of last year If it does work we have a relatively clear Fairy Lake Reservoir Holland River and Lake Simcoe SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Sun shines a day at a time This has been quite a win ter in more ways than one Cold snow cold snow When it wasnt cold enough to freeze the brains of a brass monkey God or the weatherman or somebody let fly with the confetti as though it were the biggest wedding in the world And Im stuck with three females A broody wife a moody daughter and a pregnant cat So things havent exactly looked up as spring hides well around that corner However there are always bright spots and Ive had a fair share of hem Terry Marker took me to task in a long intelligent letter in rebuttal to rather disgruntled col umn I wrote about teaching He didnt convince mc but lets say that am a little more disgruntled than I the frustration red tape and the feel ing that youre hopelessly entangled in a huge cobweb Theres a real thrill in seeing young people grapple and grope with new ideas and light up as the ideas get through Then I hud a thoughtful letter from a Beach BC reader enclosing a clipping from the North Op timist stating that Bill Smiley is by far our most popular syndicated col umnist Thats great for the old ago which needs a little balm once Branch Royal unique organization in London Out It meets only twice a year to ob serve Remembrance Day and Day A charming and kind chap call ed Joyce made the con tact pointing out that it was a toss- up However the brightest spot of all has been the tremendous and moving response to a recent col umn about my daughter Every day letters have been coming in from all over Canada full of sympathy and warmth Many of them have been addressed to Kim herself Old friends have rallied round and complete strangers have taken time to write cheering en couraging letters and cards This has not restored my faith in human Heres an excerpt from a typical letter Whatever happens dont blame yourselves Its very easy to do this as parents You did what most of us try to do you taught her to stand on her own feet And heres another Dear Bill Delected grave concern beneath your casual request for a prayer I have solicited our Father on your daughters behalf and I feel that He has answered your prayer May God mil dim in iii- f his son Jesus Christ That was all from a complete stranger From Red Deer came a long letter full of scriptural comfort This is only a sampling I am not an emotional or sentimen tal person My wife calls me Old But it has touched me deeply that so many people have tried to communicate with and help a stranger Sometimes a columnist feels that he is writing in a great cold void Its not a good feeling Now I know better and I will be of good heart Meanwhile we live a day at a time the sun shines spring is on its way Thank you all Its good to know that there is stilt a great deal of human kind ness in a world that sometimes looks a bit bleak Dear Editor I would like t refer to the recent resignation of the town engi neer It really stinks May I add that Mr Iho previous engineer resigned 1 would like to point out a facts Ihlngs which happened under two different mayors and Salisbury is to be com mended for his opinions and actions Without him I say regional govern ment the sooner the better In my opinion Mr Eves and Mr Smith have contributed nothing and the members of council have nine months left in which to show the voters Ihey qualify It isnt ail i mm members of signed lo municipal rs assistant and one fore man from he works department have resigned One other employee has left ami is now holding a respon sible position in the Aurora water department and there has been a turnover of ipproxtmatoly five em ployees in the clerical staff of the municipal office There has also been a com plete new appointed planning board As well the very important Depart ment of Industry no longer exists Ono member of the plait- cannot think of any other resignations or questionable appoint ments but the year is not finished yet there may be more to come For Mr Eves and Mr han to try to humiliate the engineer and the mayor is so much nonsense I km didnt change and apparently they didnt In fact after the meeting if the engineer resigned Your paper reported when the building on St was pur chased that it could be bought and paid for by rezoning land on the Cane Parkway a road that goes nowhere for highrise apartments but when after the building had been purchas ed the land came up for rezoning the mayor himself cast the vote that refused to rezone the land Engineer was paid annually and it is now re ported that it will cost a week and consultant Dear Editor As a loyal supporter of the Newmarket Hodmen Hockey Club I wish to hereby protest the increase in admission price which was in effect at Sundays game was advised by Mr Mat- lice the increase of twentyfive cents for adults was to cover the increase in expenses of another referee do not feel this increase is justified as the crowd now attend ing is at least three limes greater than when we supported the team in the cold winter months in the unhealed arena The amount of increase is incidental as twentyfive cents is nothing in this day and age It is the principle of the increase at play off time to all season supporters when the attendance is three times greater That is appalling MrMatlice should be inform ed the Trudeau Government is trying to combat inflation Sincerely yours FLETCHER 1 Queen St Newmarket Dear Editor We would like to thank you once again for the one years sub scription donated for our dance in aid of the Retarded Childrens As sociation We are pleased to report our dance was a success The kind cooperation of people like yourselves helped to make this possible Yours truly BETA SIGMA PHI Chapter Mrs P Shcrrard Corresponding Secretary Topless meter maids The most perplexing bit of news to reach my cars last week was a complaint from a member of coun cil that Newmarket is losing money on its old parking meters This came as a result of my nosing following a report from one of my spies thai some motorists had received tickets for violating the new parking regula tion which increases the parking rate from five cents to ten cents an hour Apparcntlv someone forgot to tell he Newmarket Parking Au thority boys that the bylaw hasnt even been passed yet The illegal tickets were issued to in the Timothy St and St areas But if Newmarket is losing money simply because some motorists wont take the trouble to park their ciirs i front of a parking meter then something should be done about it Now Ive always been one of those people who believe that govc the Inst illation of parking meters were set up strictly as a means of keeping some semblance of law iind order particularly order since masses of unmanned cars strewn every which way on our streets would he a most ungainly sight Here perhaps I should men tion that he councillor did not make the distinction between losing mon ey and not gaining money IF he really meant that we are losing mon ey insofar as the revenue from the meters does not equal the cost of printing the parking tickets and paying the wage of the man who issues them then Id say get rid of the meters and let everyone park for nothing At least we wouldnt lose money that way But failing the general prosperity of Newmar ket depends on a steady flow of happy willing to our streets then there are two possible methods of approach to the solution First we could impose a fine on everyone who falls to park provided of he owns an automobile or some other form of motorized vehicle such as a anything that would take up For those who firmly believe that any form of organized resistance would be improbable as a solution have a second and much more Imagi native plan Promotion is the key word in any moneymaking venture today as everyone knows so why not create i promotion department with in the municipality If citizens are not parking as should there must he it reason A team of motiva tion researchers would soon find the answer Good motivation researchers and mind you we would have to hire the best a way of letting people know what Ihey want before even realize they want it and then supplying it for them Not only would the acquisi tion of a good psychologist help probe he deep rooted disturbances obvious ly inherent in all but it would help eliminate exposure the types of personalities who are vir tually pushing our town into bank ruptcy by stuffing our parking met ers with such objects as Japanese yens milk tokens and obi Saint Christopher this is all are good for now since he Pope laid St Christopher off list year i 1 lib I di rigibles we should with the help of the promotion gentlemen be on our way Where is the incentive park in Newmarket today There Is none And why Because we dont advertise or revert to gimmickry Think for example what a few miniskirted topless beauties posed beside our parking meters could do And what give for a penny each Or we could give to patrons who park for wo hours or more such thing as face cash coupons for each rips to Florida and mugs with stripes a Around
