Purples lead novice league NEWMARKET In Newmarket Minor Hoc key League novice action Vaudeville as has sometimes been said novice isnt dead after all It seems it has just taken to Blues 2 White Reds War the water or the troupers are wearing skates Now where do you see the acts that have a lot of lift and laughs that used to brighten up the matinees Mostly now in the Ice Capades or the frozen floor follies and frolics Or on other occasions during the summer when the guys and gals who make the swimming pool home for two months do their fine and fancy diving NEWMARKET MINORS Doug Long counted tor Roc- Jeff Brown and Terry for White Rods The two tennis are tied for the spot In the league with seven points Black are in the cellar with five Green White Dwayne and Paul Essery scored for Greens They have 12 points and Mustangs Bruce Waits and scored Mustangs and goalie way saying the A couple of hours of spins and jumps and waltzing to the music of the House of Strouss is delightful to view but it can always be aided by some flying falls flaps from the current clown of the figure skating world One time there was a chnp name of Dunn we seem to remember who did his skating act with one leg Del and Charlie Rutledge used to give us a bundle of laughs with their figure skating antics during the annual Newmar ket Figure Skating Club carnival Gib Charlie and company gave us a good act ROLL OUT THE BARRELS Then too in the earlier days of town figure skating carnivals they did roll out the barrels empty that is and see who could jump the most with the skates Sometimes somebody didnt make it and took real flopperoo However It was mostly hurt dignity Weve always been for this sort of thing The Newmarket Figure Skating Club lias always had the right idea Kvery member of the club gets into the act in their annual Our Town on Ice Its coming up in March course most of us wont want to miss it Another thing we miss today it used to be a regular before the advent of ice is the annual east vs west hockey game or east vs west session They drew customer to the arena and did had a good laugh TOM KIRK NIGHT Tom Kirk Night when all the boys and girls attending our schools participated in hockey finals skate races and relays back in days of yore was a highlight of the hockey season Somehow since it was before artificial ice it usually man aged to wind up on watery ice We grew ton big too fast The Night got too big We couldnt accommodate all the kids at the at once which isnt to say we couldnt now make it a two even three night event First Night say Grades one to five second Night six to eight I think too we might make it to include high school students Throw the rink open for skating racing and possibly a challenge match between Huron and Newmnrket We were making some enquiries after the football playoffs and Grey Cup about the broomball shoes that Ottawa Rough Riders used Ron tells us has been played in shoes rather than skates We would think every one would have a great sliding time without the shoes FAIRY LAKE REGATTA Getting back to this business of making our own fun I was talking to Recreation Director Dan Shannon with regards to running a rogettn here this summer on Fairy Lake The last one during our town Centennial Celebrations was a major success We dont know whether Ivan Burke has located his mothers wash tub or not It went down under Ivan during the tub race he got it back when the water went out of Fairy Lake months later champion of the Hub Jake took his best tux tails to win a victory Trouble was Jake took to the water to celebrate the triumph and all but lost his top hat over the best weekly We have every l hi i start practicing early on the upper reaches of the Holland River so as to be fit for this main LOG ROLLING CHAMPS It seems to us Ivan Ruddock or Basher Groves ended up as the log rolling champion We carted off to the pain bouse for treatment during the day or the month that followed Anyhow it would be nice to have another regetta on Fairy Lake The first was in 1880 the second in 1058 Perhaps we can make it three in 1970 Perhaps some service club might be interested in sp the
