A Word The Week REV CRAIG A CRIBAR St Andrews Presbyterian Church Last Sunday Nov 30 was the beginning of Advent As I am sure you know Advent means com ing For Christians it refers specifically to the coming of the Christ We Christians believe that Christ the Mes siah the anointed One of the most high God came in Jesus of Nazareth who was born of a Jewish girl named Mary long ago In what we used to call Palestine More than one note Is struck in the churchs observance of the Advent Season One note is penitence When we are penitent we confess our sins we repent of them turn away from them asking for forgiveness and resolving with Gods help not to sin or fall again When we hate persons and Identify them with causes or actions we arc opposed to we are headed for serious trouble Hatred is poison ft Is deadly It blinds our vision It makes us literally made We Christians should remember that one of the evil forces which crucified our Lord on Calvary was blind hatred Things may be hated conditions detested With out Indignation rising to the boiling point evil flourishes Many noble men and women who helped abolish many wrongs were angry against evil conditions and things Too often we arc timid playing it safe when we should be angry against things But never should we hale per sons even revolting cruel evil persons This season of Advent Is for Christians a time of preparation of our minds and hearts and homes for the coming of the Prince of Peace It should see us deal ing honestly with our hatreds and other sins Listen to the Bible Lot all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander he put away from you with all malice and he kind to one another tenderhearted forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you Let us pray that not only for this Advent Season but for the entire year and years ahead God will fill our hearts with love that while we hate things which are evil in us and in our community we may love per sons into newness of life Excellent reception
