THE ERA WED NOVEMBER 26 1069 VOL NO it Editorials For the kiddies again tho weatherman smiled on northern York County and once again this good weather capped successful Newmarket and Aurora Santa Clans parade Even it the weather hadnt been Ideal tho parades would have been successful because of the untiring unselfish efforts of hundreds of people and dozens of organizations The list of names of these people and organizations is loo long to enumerate here so The Era speaks for all who enjoyed these parades and says to each Thank You However that ugly old ogre money is raising its head more and more each year as the parades get bigger and bigger By far the largest percentage of work on the parades and floats is performed by volunteers at their own expense But there arc certain expenditures needed that must be paid in hard cold cash This money has been raised in the past by the various Santa Clans Parade Committees seeking donations from local merchants raising funds through dances and raffles But tho lime is approaching and in some cases has arrived where all tho volunteer help generous donations and fundraising activi ties simply does not raise enough money lo meet the expenses of the parade that we have come to expect These committees are soon going lo have lo seek aid from area municipal governments Their requests for help should receive sympathetic consideration After Santa Parades are for kiddies Could end speculation Finance Minister Bensons new tax plan if and whan it becomes effective could put quite a clamper on land speculation something that has been rampant in the area for several years Added to the federal governments clamp on this type of activity is the much heavier tax levy which is going to be imposed on speculative land The recent assessment court made it clear that land though pur chased for future development will not fare so badly if it continues to still be farmed On the other hand land that remains unused and is merely held for an inflated sale price will have to pay taxes commensurate with the price being asked Land values in and around town have skyrocketed in the last two or three years with instances turning up where prices being asked are five and six times what they were two years ago has already lost one industry because of this very inflation and the hope is now that land holders will he persuaded to part with property at a much more reasonable figure The Tribune SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley A rewarding profession THE Readers ERA Dear Editor in spile of ft successful tion it now appears that the
