p A G E F R THE ERA WED OCTOBER 8 VOL 118 NO Editorials Our historys hidden A suggestion the old British naval anchor at Holland Landing be moved to its original destination at the restored nineteenth century British naval ba3e at aroused considerable ire in these parts and rightly so The suggestion thnt the anchor be moved also drew the retort that York County should look to the restoration and marking of its own historic sites The Holland Landing area is equally as important the PenetangMidland area historically said one renowned who is involved in the Penetang restoration York County after all is one of the most historic of Ontarios counties yet it has very few of its historic associations marked For instance no where is The Little Rebel William Lyon Mac kenzies association with the farmers of York commemorated Mackenzie sat in the Upper Canada legislature for York County and later capitalized on his strong support among the countys voters by leading many of them on his rebellious march down Yonge St There is nothing to show that his grandson William Lyon Mackenzie King the man who was Prime Minister of Canada longer than any other represented York County in the House of Commons during part of his career There is no plaque to indicate that Sir William Mulock the father of the penny post was a Newmarket boy Nothing shows where the Toronto Carrying Place the ancient Indian and furtrading trail which the first white man In these parts Brule used passed through York County It ran from Holland Landing to the mouth of the River Nothing marks Newmarkets Pioneer Burying Ground on Ragle St where lie early settlers veterans of the War of and the fur trade and members of families who belonged to the Family Compact These are but a few samples of the real wo in York County can claim as our own Lots preserve them The early worm Newmarket has been conspicuous by its absence in the bidding between municipalities for the York County School Boards soontobobuilt administration building Despite the fact that the town is the county seat and probable seat of any new regional government the town fathers have allowed both other major centres in the county Aurora and Richmond Hill to get their bids in ahead of them The very fact that both these two assessmentconscious towns have been actively lobbying for the centre indicates it is a plum not to be lost lightly The building is bound to be large and attractive an asset for the town the trustees choose to locale it in will employ a sub stantial number of people Lets spread kindness Sometimes we shoot an arrow in the air which conies to earth we know not where At others we drop a pebble in a pool and the ripples made are really cool Something like this hap petted recently to my fatherinlaw On our last visit to him inspired by hundreds of tines of poetry he hud learned in public school some little while ago He is 78 This was an entirely un expected facet of Grandads persona lity We with admiration and he lit up like a neon sign with modest pride Most of us cant remem ber an eightline poem for two weeks after memorizing it How mnliy can remember hundreds of lines after almost years But one thing bothered him He couldnt remember all the stanzas of an old favorite The Vil lage Blacksmith It has one verse in particular which he wanted to get straight because it was a solace to him in his loneliness since the loss of his wife The smith hud lost his wife too but wns pressing on Most of you middleaged and older folk will remember the poem or at least a few lines as I do Under a and he determin ed that hed remedy the lack He wrote to a farmers magazine the He was overwhelmed almost physically by the response Approximately letters came pouring in People from ten years old to those in their nineties wrote him Some remembered studying the poem and chatted about the good old days of the oneroom rural school Others sent the whole poem Some wrote it laboriously with it One customer went to the trouble and expense of having pho tostatic copies made What really delighted Grandad though was he kindness of the notes mid letters that accom panied the poem One lady sent a lung list of poems from Hie old Grade Three and Four readers And the letters came from as far cast as Nova Scotia and from It in the west Thus my fatherinlaw learned of the power of the press the power of the press something which touches a chord or a nerve in the reader and rouses him from his habitual apathy to heights of kindness or fury Ive recently had a good example Not long ago I mentioned here In one paragraph a woman who is struggling to raise a family of six decently on welfare A good and kindly woman of read it and responded She wrote and offered to send a box of clothing generation Hint needs to realize it By Allan Ward and Mark Craig Dear Allan Ward and Mark Craig Dear This letter is in regard to the item about Teen Town which appeared in Ihe Oct 1 edition of The in the column written by Allan Ward and Mark Craig The Teen Town committee has been meeting every week for Ihe past month planning this years Wo are hoping to our first dance this month but we have not made definite plans as yet We hope that when the dances do gel going they will be success ful they can only bo if Ihey are supported well If we get the support of EVERY high school student in Newmarket we can guarantee thai this years Teen Town will be the best one in long lime irkel and a future park site I would like to express my wholehearted support to such a proposal Metro Toronto is the third most densely populated city in North America and is growing at the rate to 8 per year which means each year a community almost the size of Newmarket and Aurora put to gether is added to Metro When one considers the soc ial problems of cities like New York and Chicago which arc caused by having loo people in ton small an area then surely an investment in open space and fresh air is an excellent one I think the Councils and Parks Board of Newmarket and Aurora have an opportunity to leave an ex cellent legacy by working to this goal Colon Crier On fly swatting I have had to break
