THE ERA WED JULY 1969 VOL NO 29 Editorials Proper choice Newmarket Council was perfectly within its rights in choosing Lou Stephens to fill a vacant council seat and In choosing him probably made the best choice of the available candidates The vacancy was created by the resignation of Hugh Grant who was elected last December Council had three names placed before it Mr Stephens Henry and Herbert When it came to a vote Mr Stephens defeated Mr by a vote Council elected Mr Stephens despite the fact that Mr Vanden received more vote at the December election Councillors decided to take advantage of a recent amendment to the Ontario Municipal Act and choose anyone they wish not follow tradition and pick the runnerup In his column this week the Town Crier accuses council of a blatant disregard for democracy in choosing Mr Stephens over Mr The Town Crier cites the fact that more people voted for Mr VandenBergh than Mr Stephens and that it was therefore the wishes of the electorate that he sit on council This is not necessarily so Mr VandenBergh ruled himself out as a candidate for the vacant seat when he made some untimely remarks following a recent council meeting Council in its wisdom chose Mr Stephens It did so because the majority felt that Mr Stephens would be the best man for the job Council was elected to make decisions for the good of all the town and in this case did the job we are paying them to do The Town Crier is wrong in his assessment of the situation and the council is right The Era wishes Mr Stephens and his colleagues every success during the remainder of their term Increase tax penalty The Ontario Municipal Association is presently going to ask the Province to raise the limit municipalities can penalize property tax delinquents and those who are in arrears The limit for tax arrears is eight per cent per annum and one per cent per month for those who are delinquent in paying their The Government should raise the limit for taxpayers in arrears those who havent paid their taxes within a year to per cent Then perhaps Newmarket for example would not end up with about per cent of its taxes not collected Bar the door Matilda ami close then respect for my country but to ask me to show respect to a flag that resem bles a rag that a butcher has used to clean off his counter with and that was foisted on us by Pearson to appease Quebec and incidentally to build a monument to himself That is another matter I would fight for my country again if necessary But I would not wrap my garbage in Pearsons patch work for posterity If we are going to have a flag at least let us have one we can respect Maybe we at the Canadian International Develop ment Agency can help Because of an intensi fied interest in Canadas interna tional development
