THE ERA WED FEBRUARY 1069 VOL NO 5 Editorials End boom and bust Education Minister William considering keeping high schools ope welcome one It means that expensive buildings with facilities that can be used by everyone will not be idle for three or four months of the year It means that more students will be able to receive an educa tion without the taxpayers being burdened by paying for more facilities It means that thousands of high school students will not be dumped on the labor market at the same time Instead their holidays will be staggered thus affording some of them the opportunity of obtain ing jobs at stores during the Christmas shopping rush and at other times It means that parents will not be restricted to taking their holidays during the summer months only Even more important it wont make ghost towns out of Instead these resort areas will have yearround business instead of the boom and bust of the present It will also provide more steady employment and more part- time employment and therefore channel more dollars into the economy of such areas as the South Shore of Lake Growth is coming Its refreshing to find a community in this day and age in York County that is content with things as they are In a period when most people equate growth with prosperity North GwilKrobury council tins decided to stay as they are week North Gwiliimbury Township Council voted no change after a discussion on the merits of amalgamation with Sutton and Georgian Township North is an ideal size with its permanent popu lation of just under Reeve Dave Davidson told the council the Minister of Municipal Affairs has said But the same minister has also warned municipal councils in York that things arent going to slay the same regional govern ment is coming by The fear that seems to have moved North to vote to retain its autonomy was expressed by Deputy Wallace As a council we are sadly uninformed on regional government The failure is not the townships but the provinces Ontario should be supplying municipalities with some idea of whats coming even if its only on a confidential basis so and growth decisions during the next two years can be made accordingly Dear Editor It seems that i Era has raised its price it ha The SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley The Generation Gap This week I showed my students a film about the Generation Gap and then had them write an essay on gap One was from my old high school math teacher I dont mean that he was old It was just a long time ago It was a pleasant shock o hear from him The pleasure came from his report that he was alive and well and curling and ski ing The shock was the realization that the gentleman we tailed Old Flem Is only about years older than I am Strangely as things so often happen in this world I was talking about him in school tint very day The kids and I were talking i i strapping slapping the whole told them about how Miss Liza used to break pointers over my head regularly and Miss Maty Walker used to strap mo and my young brother and a kid called three times a week whether we needed it or not And we liked them And how Mr our sci ence teacher a mm of portions and the patience of a saint used to sweep two of us off our stools with one cuff And we never held it against him And how my old math teacher at a point when even the angels would be tried used to give us a punch with two knuckles just below the ribs And we liked mid him when got our breath I Those people got a rot ten deal financially and socially from tho community Hut at least they could clobber a kid and thats worth a lot of money If you even shake your finger at some rotten turns out to be a barrackroom lawyer or else hes too big to clip on the ear because he could cat you alive and would My other letter the same Id enjoy Hows that Three gen erations ami no discernible gap Maybe its because none of us are teenagers any more Old would like Young Ruth and Id enjoy talking to both of them Well to go back to the beginning some of the essays as signed were revealing One blames the gap on Another says its been there since Shakespeare which is true Others say its been blown out of all proportion by the news media seeking for conflict and the Another says It is just the intense cliil Iron iaed in their parents And of fear of the unknown is the most powerful fear in man The ed t deadly emotion to deal with it is compos ed of blind hate between strangers And hate is a policemans face as he a barefoot girt or a principals face as he confronts a lired boy And on Then there are the adults who posing as shock ed and indignant eat up such iLSD thrust sheets of ding addiction 1 Hi I in ill this ha serious as racial or religious prejudice Is closing peoples minds Adults fear a revolution but the young people my know- ledge have not even though of such a thing However getting stronger and stronger every day is the young peoples urge just be left alone This tendency could be just as disuniting as revolution Glad to hear from you Old and you Young Ruth And all I can say is to you Kim Smiley whose opinions fragmented appear in the quota- marks above raised its editorial sights to take on President Gaulle and Prime Minister Trudeau no less Although it warms this renders hardening arteries to see something else in your newspaper other than Aunt Maggies anniversary party the editor should think an issue through before firing his popgun pen in international circles What would the editor ask Ml to do about the so rilled a Call Gaulle a bad Display equally bad manners and not invite a French foreign minister to lunch Place a boycott on French champagne I submit Mr Editor that the Prime Minister attacked the problem the correct way that is by ignoring it feel dc Gaulle would be hurt more by being ignor ed than by having a great fuss being made over his dinner fishing Id rather sit for fishing than sit for hours browsing through the Newmarket phono of his audience were a product of what he termed a central mond post interspersed with au thority anil obedience and from what I could sec few of us there from lack of a broad He said ah woe betide the man who didnt learn to think dress and act like mo the teacher presumably Personally I would be very proud if thought I grown into the image of my teach er in that old school ho was tough made sure he was in au thority and above all turned out lets be sure we dont throw out the baby along with the baptismal water One Roomer Dear Editor Mr Lloyd Dennis the HallDennis Report certainly cap tivated his audience last week at Prince Charles School with his en thusiasm on needed changes in our educational outlook and his barbed Ho reminded us what a glorious educational future our chil dren could have if we dispensed I could agree that we do need some serious thought given change both for students and teachers but Mr Dennis seemed lo forget that himself his col leagues on the platform and most THIS WEEK cated work of Mrs Lynn Heard for Dear Editor I would like to congratu late Mr Don Popple It is wonderful that he has taken advantage of Mr Slaters pool at Vandorf The children in the county to indoor swimming Wo hope he keeps up the We all are seeking power Its been three weeks since Pierre Trudeau lashed the English press for its pretty crummy behavior in covering the Commonwealth summit conference but theres still no hint that his iii I iu iiiil i li on the question of individual pri vacy as he hoped Granted his tantrum did raise some controversy but only of the most shallow and superficial kind Some Canadians agreed with the Prime Minister that jour nalists in London behaved tike eavesdroppers and gossip- hungry Peeping Toms Others took the side of the press and pounced on statement that the police should investigate the private lives Prime Rut few il seems were willing to lake claim that his attack on the was prompted by a genuine desire to stimulate public debate on indi vidual rights to privacy Blame it on our cynical age but most Cana dians tended to attribute his out burst I personal petulance ratliei lb in publicspirited motive Its a pity that Trueadu wasnt taken more seriously for there is a need to examine not only the question of privacy but of indi- of institutions and organizations are growing in power augmenting their membership mid strengthen- bin i limn The Federal Government for example lias become a hydra- ing in size Some will soon become large that a single strike could cripple the nation a situation that has already damaged the economy In law is likely lo become a police state but there is danger in police eagerness for the power to tune in to peoples private lives with the use of t ionic eavesdropping devices and wiretapping equipment Examining this issue in the omnibus bill to amend the Criminal Code some ob servers wondered whether the age policeman today has either the educational qualifications liberal arts background to appreciate the subtleties the situ Another privacy lining commended that lawyers in the future should be permitted to re veal confidential information about their clients in response to a court hungry for power In some parts of the world student groups have become near- terrorist organizations will ing to burn and injure even kill lo increase their power on campus Its been less violent in Canada although the power play is obviously in full gear to force school governing bodies to accept student members It appears some an idim women i welfan feel the too think big A Federal offi cial recently warned that women welfare recipients may organize into a pressure group seeking more power to exert against local agenc ies Such an organization already exists in the US And so obviously power lid in di power can neither In in I taken fiMi one and exerted it has i Ions extend far beyond the of privacy in his or reporters Crier By BILL GAMBLE No sooner had the news leaked out that we might be hav ing an offtrack betting shop in Well the answer is no I no greater knowledge of horse racing than he average bet tor Nor do I have an infallible at my fingertips for making Hilton and P Taylor However if you feel you must contribute to he support of the racetrack owners there are still imbeciles in the world and even this column cannot divorce a foal from his folly you should at least know what a horse is A horse is a fourlegged animal of somewhat uncertain Were the velocity certain partially explains whv some horses particularly the ones I bet on run sideways also explains why some horses arc made to wear blinkers The next most Import ant part of a horse is the back for without it the jockey would have no place sit A jockey Is Now that we know the difference between horse and the jockey we must learn the tricks of betting First of all one should never bet on more than one horse in a race Second do not on every race on card Third avoid betting in maiden races since heir guess work Now the best system for belting Is place your money on he horse with the most certain uncertain velocity If the race track owners havent lived right you may win a bundle In which case you should quit right there Only a fool would give Ihe cash back The best way to resist the temptation of giving the money back is to invest it in something tangible I know of a chap who once won several thousand dollars on the racetrack and invested the entire lot in a of pigs Is doubtful if he chap at the offtrack betting shop would accept an armful of pigs as a bet bettor exhibited wis dom and that is best advice I can think of The only other person THE ERA Serving York County Since Incorporating THE POST THE HERALD DAVID Published every Wednesday at St Newmarket Ontario the Newmarket Era Express mi two
