The eka wed January is woo vol us no Control no ban Editorials A E F writers to complain about snowmobiles Last weeks edition of The Tribune of mid The Advocate of Sutton carried editorials culling for more controls over the operation of snowmobiles In December our old friend luey Clarke wrote us a tetter condemning them We agree with our two colleagues in and Sutton about more controls and disagree with in her utter condemnation Snowmobiling especially in northern York County has reached fantastic proportions beyond the wildest dreams of the machines manufacturers Men and women young mid are spending hours outdoors on snowmobiles thai they used to spend in front of the boob lube Its common sighl today to see dad driving the machine mom behind him hauling a sleiphful of children Many families take a winter safari across some snow- covered lake or field their sleighs packed with barbecue meat buns and soft drinks for an outing under the bright winter sun Then there are the cowboys who roar their snowmobiles across front lawn driveways backyards fields and other pieces of private property completely disregarding the rights of others it is in this area where controls are necessary the protec tion and peace of mind of private property owners The Provincial Govern has made a feeble and farcical attempt at controlling snowmobile making display of license plates on each machine mandatory This is just another way for the govern ment to make money because who can read the twoinch high numbers on a plate as it speeds by at or 10 miles an hour especially Municipal governments should pass bylaws restricting the operation of snowmobiles to certain areas of their municipalities Restric tions should also be placed on the hours in which these machines can operate Police can enforce these bylaws and lay charges Hut they cant touch anyone on private property Its up to the individual to watch for offenders call the police and then lay a charge of trespassing all snowmobiles is not the Lucy more controls is anil some common sense and courtesy by the people who operate them SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley A New Years Eve party Hope you got through the holiday season
