Bra Wed September 4 27 Brighten your garden with poppies Nothing will give the gardes a bigger splash of colour than tie spectacular and flamboyant oriental poppies Huge brilliantly colored blooms are borne profusely on plants that are three feet or more tall When I was a boy a dark red and a flashy orange were the only colors avail able Now were fortunate to have a very wide range of colors including pink The plants are extra big so theyll need lots of room Id recommend that you allow at least nine square feet of border space for each poppy Give them a location towards the back of the border and just in front of the tallest plants such as delphiniums and holly hocks Once youve got them off to a good start youll find that theyll grow number of years Many Oriental poppies much prefer a full sun location although they do reasonably well in light shade Excel lent drainage is a must of inches In waterlogged soils theyll usually winter kill Where the drainage is poor and cannot be correct ed by tiles or other means you can raise the soil level six inches above the exist ing soil line to take care of the needed drainage Hie hardiest of perennials goes dormant from the first of August the middle of September and this is the only satisfactory time to plant or transplant Spring planting can be done when absolutely neces sary but it must be carried out by the time the new growth is six inches high Poppies set out daring August and early Septem ber will have time to form very much needed top growth before winter In planting or trans planting oriental poppies keep in mind that they have a long tap root that of a dandelion This makes transplanting some what difficult The tops of the plants are also very much like Ihe fuzzy ones of the dandelion Dont be stingy on the fairly low in of the planting bole is gen than two to three inches below the surface of the soil Gradually add the special soil mixture firm- period before getting into the ground Keep them in a pail of water or cover ed with a piece of wet bur lap while waiting for the planting to take place Unless the garden soil in first class shape Id dis card the soil removed from the hole and replace it with a mixture consisting of two parts top soil one part To each bushel of soil add pound of a complete after to settle the soil Remembei dormant roots do not re quire water Frequent waterings at this time al- invariably cause root will need to be covered with a mulch to prevent the tap roots from being heaved out of the ground by the action of the frost in late winter and early spring A three inch mulch in the beginning of old heavy straw or some other form of humus will soon sink to the required two inches The mulch should be applied only after the ground has frozen Do poppies jig their off or disturbed while dormant than for any Oriental poppies during the growing season need a good soaking once a week with the moisture penetrat ing to a depth of four to five inches Overhead watering directly to the surface of The poppies like to be cul tivated freely but you can do them a great deal of harm by hoeing too deeply oriental poppies Each plant has numerous fleshy roots which are easily damaged Make sure that theyre not easily damaged by letting them lie around exposed to the sun and wind for a long you dont leave a hollow in the ground im mediately around the plants or you may have drainage problems Water should be applied only once Dairy herd costs across province oriental poppies need little attention However its im portant that the flowers be cut off as they wither or a great deal of the energy of the plant will be used in producing useless seed pods instead of developing next also a good plan just as soon as the foliage begins to turn yellow to cut off the flower stems within an inch of the ground surface Be sure and mark each loca tion with some small wood- About the only real com plaint with oriental poppies is that foliage turns yellow and dies not long after the blooming period is over This usually means a bare spot in the border for the rest of the garden season You can get around this by planting the area surround ing the poppies with an nuals such as nicotine zin nias or marigolds Newly planted clumps at this time of the year can also be dis guised by moving in peren nial chrysanthemums in bud or full bloom TORONTO The cost of milk
