new job NEWMARKET It could have been a routine search for employment but there was a vast difference for Mrs Anna Maria Jarmics 32 who resides with her husband Stephen and their three children near the intersection of Davis Drive and the Cone of Whit church Township she is a double amputee she has no hands Mrs Jarmics was a challenge to the counsellors at the office of Canada Man power Centre in Newmarket but due to the untiring efforts of many mem bers of the staff and a determination on the part of Mrs Jarmics she is now a valued employee In the Dietary De partment at York Central Hospital at Richmond Hill Transportation to and from work was just another obstacle to be overcome by Mrs Jarmics Before she ever landed the job at York Central she made a trip into the Manpower to Inform the staff Im mobile now I have just been granted my motor vehicle operators lie- Canada on March 16 this year and Mrs made her first visit to the Man power Centre on April Counsellor Mrs Isobel checked her work background and record to try to establish a position which would suit her She tried various employers but always seemed to end up with a polite Im sorry when Mrs Jarmics disabi lity was mentioned Mr had been working on a after their arrival and while permanent he was accustom of studies he had completed his univer sity training war engulfed the country and he eventually did ordinary farm work until troubles again racked his homeland Mrs disability reads like a film clip from a television script When she was nine years of age she was ing in a garden with a younger brother and sister when one of the crew of an enemy tank lobbed a hand grenade near the children Anna hustled the younger children to safely and with an instinct to fight back picked up the grenade and start ed to run after the tank but her valiant reasoning left her with the loss of both Twelve years later when the opportu nity presented itself she left and found refuge in a camp in Austria A few months later she found her way to Eng Stephen met Anna in England and they were married Their three chil dren were born there and Stephen work ed on farms in that country progressing from herdsman to farm manager dur ing the last six years Gradually their plans were formulat ed and they were able to arrange to come to Canada Mr is working at the Chris tian Brothers Farm near Newmarket Mr William another counsellor at Canada Manpower became interested in Mrs Jarmics search for employment and finally an interview was arranged at York Central Hospital An official at the hospital reported to Mr that Mrs Jarmics was one of their best employees and puts the rest of us to shame with her ability Anna Maria is also very happy with her work and fellow employees and although she has artificial attachments she does not use them She says she cannot get same feeling The family have once again found contentment in Canada Their three children attend the Separate School at Sharon and Stephen and most of all Anna Marie have a renewed faith in their adopted country queen of 1968 Trade Fair at Keswick last week
