THE WED JUNE Editorials Basic values The death of Senator Robert Kennedy has touched all of The Eras readers Few of us knew him or have even seen him But all of us knew that he was a good man trying to right wrongs raise a family serve his country things which a good man tries to do The Era usually does not comment on international events instead leaves that to the large daily newspapers and the pundits of television But most of The Eras readers are good peopletrying to right raise families and serve their country in various ways and for these reasons it is appropriate now to comment on this horrible inter national event The events which led up to this international incident and previous incidents of and murder could very well happen in Canada if we as individuals dont do something now to stop it The United States in on earth the greatest richest and Yet the people of the United States murder such men as Dr Martin Luther King President Kennedy and now his brother A white man kills a black man and because he lias colored skin few care about or mourn his death The black man lashes back burn ing and killing and harming the members of his own race The country is filled with bigotry and hatred and its because the people of the United States have lost sight of some of the basic values of life Through their industry they have made their country the rich nation it is But now they are chiding the almighty dollar for themselves when they should be searching for and finding God We In Canada all of us could be like these people in the United States unless we as individuals do something now We must return to the basic values of life We must protect and enlarge our role in our families We must end the bigotry and hate that is creeping upon us We must follow the Golden We must find God There is no amount of money that can help us There is no poli tical party that can help us There is no one person that can help us It is a job for each of us alone and it must be done he has no business interests outside the Ah your editorial says John Roberts is goodlooking married industrious and ambitious With such qualifications he will serve the riding well when he is elect ed Your title should have been a snow job rather than a para chute job Yours sincerely J Ball Vandorf Dear Editor To those of us who listened to The Great Deflate on Sunday night I must agree with most of the national editorials that Mr Douglas retained his imperturb ability while the Prime Minister although he regained sonic of his composure during the latter part seemed ill at ease and lacking the verve and vigor he showed on the hustings Perhaps it was that haircut it was unfair perhaps but we were reminded of Samson who once he was shorn lost most of his strength Mr Douglas and Mr Stan- field hey In it society where private rillens and public leaders alike can pursue heir rea sonably assured that they will not be struck down by a bullet now will happen to the reviewing my material for last weeks I find I had com bined opinions from both this paper and the Banner In forming my con clusion concerning the qualifica tions for a Federal candidate I now see that the Era does hold the view that residence in the rid ing by he candidate should be a consideration by the voter So my red scarf matches my eyes rather face and I apologize for No matter what ones of resident I dont personally believe that a candi dates address has any bearing whatsoever when considering that the Federal House should deal with national issues Ie housing gages employment and national unity rather than local issues Don main qualifica tions are intelligence the drive and enthusiasm of youth a first hand knowledge of the problems of edu cation and of youth through his experience as an educator and his genuine concern for people Wallace has matu rity a and successful ex perience in business and finance and a demonstrated ability to make sound decisions John Roberts is the least known of the contenders He has demon strated great capabilities at an early age by his appointment to Ihe post of Executive Assistant to he Honorable Maurice Same He shares the views of a young and dynamic Prime Minister who believes thnt achievement of national unity is essential to eco nomic development Choose the candidate whose qual ification and party policy appeals to you the most whether his address is King Township Gorm ley via Day Street or somewhere yet to be decided in York County via Ottawa and Toronto Man guns is the latest In American scries of bans Just as banning booze In he late twen ties did absolutely nothing to atop people from drinking and in contributed greatly he increase In crime would preventing he sate of firearms prevent assas sinations just ask Julius Caesar or Alexander Great Neither does it follow that firearms would deter crime since most licensed guns are In hands of responsible citizens while on the other hand doubt if hoodlums and thieves bother reglsler theirs 1 do not say thai tighter con trol of firearms Is unnecessary since it is Guns should not he sold to idiots or by mall order All firearms should he licenc ed and only to persons who have passed thorough examinations I do say that the right of a citizen In defend his properly and the right of a sportsman to hunt should not lie denied THE ERA Sorvlno York County Incorporating THE POST THE
