THE ERA WED MAY VOL NO Editorials Local issues paramount Interest in the June 25 federal election seems to be focussing more and more on issues of national import relations with Quebec international affairs and inflation in our economy for instance We should not lose sight of the more local issues directly affecting residents in this area The housing crisis although it is a national one has hit urban and suburban areas such as York County hardest In Metro Torontos fringe areas land speculators have been allowed to force land prices so high singlefamily homes for the average working man are all hot out of reach Combine the high prices with the equally exorbitant mortgage interest rate being charged by the federal government and home owner ship becomes an impossible goal for most wage earners Singlefamily residential development within Metro is slowly grind ing to a halt for lack of land and attention is focussing now on the southern half of the county During the fiveyear term of the government elected June 25 many subdivisions will go up in this area There is no easy solution to this question but all three of our candidates should be asked it nevertheless because it directly affects the future of this riding There are other federal issues which are particularly pertinent to the problems faced by an area located hard against a huge metropolis and perched on the brink of a massive development boom a Should a federal office of education be established not to take over any provincial prerogatives in this everthorny field but to initiate and coordinate programs aimed at career retraining programs to increase worker mobility within the nation and to undertake nowneglected research programs Another field where the long arm of Ottawa may be able to reach into the municipal field is that of planning Much research will have to be done if we are to build communities in the future that will match the potential of this great land A federal planning research authority which could put vast resources from around the world at the disposal of municipal planners could be of inestimable value during the next five years to the men planning the boom in York County Where do our candidates stand on these Lifes little problems Nothing trivial thia week Im going to ask and answer some questions about the more profound aspects of life If you dont like the
