Editorials The Sutton affair India for Mr As they sat in the halls and complained of the illcpfcii discrimination of strict discipline and of such things as the ban against blue lean smoking Principal A I is a perfectly right in banning long hair The matter of expelling a student is a and the Sutton District High School and certain for Grade and students The question of the expelled was raised by and the gv has been asked to con into the alleged discrimination That should been enough for the younger St they had to stage their childish sitdown strike The fact that the schools senior students refused to students speaks well for them Some even urged the jn to their classes The fact that the schools teachers back Principal These two facts mean that Sutton Highs junior students acted hastily imprudently and childishly And about all the m few hours away from class a few hoarse throat from shouting and t few sore backsides from sitting on the hard floor Their backsides should be sore from other reasons Action long overdue Over six weeks a coroners jury investigating the suicide of a man in Aurora jail termed conditions in the jail a disgrace The jury made a number of specific recommendations for the improvement of conditions in the jail and the of prisoners and urged these be carried out immediately Today conditions in the cell remain exactly as they were at the time of the hearing and as were at the time of the suicide by hanging on Nov There have been no change- in the uate of the cell and no changes in the viewing procedure of prisoners Chief Constable William maintains he is not able to make the necessary improvements himself lie points out as he did at the Inquest that a year ago he requested Council to upgrade the cell at a cost of about 5000 Aurora Councillors led by Mrs Evelyn Buck reacted indignantly to the finding- of the inquest into the hanging and claimed at a subse quent Council meeting their side of the story was not given a fair hearing It seems as though Councillor- are allowing their at criticism to blind the concern they should have for the standards they permit in the towns jail Even before the inquest Aurora Council should have taken steps i that the the the of a suicide He I Oak Ridges residents of King Township are seemingly in a hope less situation brought on by lack adaisical and belittling representa tion whose aims ate lost by useless individual belter skelter rather than sound cooperative planning Home owners in the area are inclined to refurbish their prop erty but this is very difficult when faced with swamps and deathly water holes which infest the area Council has been approached on numerous occasions to rectify this problem before a child is drowned or diseases are allowed to develop and spread through the commu nity Our council apparently entered into an agreement with the con servation authority where they would contribute am wash their bands of the mess Is this the price for the possible loss of human life They arrived at this figure and gave the ball to some one else to carry but they forgot to ask if that someone wanted to carry the ball and you guessed it They did not It is becoming more understand able now why the sales turnover of private homes in the area has increased to unbelievable alligator breeders the swamps would be put to use ami hopefully more tax dollars could he collected but again maybe council would con sider this too ambitious a project to undertake Admitted the above is sarcastic but if council does not begin func tioning with a more business like attitude they will find a stepping stone sliding beneath their feet Dickinson Oak Ridges Ontario if the V1NJ into the area problem could solve itself if attracted industry si Dear Editor In reading the letter from Fair Play I just had to reply The lake and the park were here long before the apartments When the tenants applied to rent they must have known a park is a park meant to be used by all I am sure the reason the apartment was built there was so the tenants would be able to be in the middle Also they are only yards away from the main road into town and this traffic continues hours day These facts were very ap parent before renting The noise the letter refers to was only for one afternoon or six hours In six hours happiness was given to thousands of people little and big I should also point out snowmobiles dont make any more noise than ordinary traffic Alice Sheridan SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Smiley the hustler A funny thing happened on the way to the proofrenders a couple of
