Tbe Era NewmarketAurora Out Dec The Week Inter Church Communion Major Conference Topic REV KEMP Free Methodist Church Some words get overworked Two such words are Relevant and Irrelevant I get weary of hearing the latter especially for it is often the football of the irreligious are sometimes just fancy words used Related and Applicable person then who claims that the Christian message is IRRELEVANT is saying that it has nothing of value to say to us in present day issues that it is not applicable to our problem that it has no bearing upon or relation to the needs that stare us in the face How mistaken can we mortals be Away with the unbelief that infers that our situation is so unique that the Christian message has no solution for it Someone will say The Bible is unscientific and is there fore irrelevant is an inaccurate statement the Bible is rather nonscientific The Bible does not pretend to take the scientific approach it has no quarrel with science The Christian message speaks specifically with respect to mans origin failure privilege and destiny In life we find meaning and purpose through an encounter with Jesus Christ and a continuing fellowship with Him The Christian message is unique in that it is always relevant Let us consder briefly three areas of conduct 1 HONESTY The Christian message is Let us walk honestly Rom Is real integrity of conduct so generally practised today that this is irrelevant The Old Timers used to tell returning stolen log ging chains buggy whips and other items common to then- day when Christians Is the Christian message with respect to honesty irrele vant today in a time of unparalleled petty thefts shoplift ing padded expense accounts income tax evasions etc etc 2 PURITY The Apostle Paul writing to one of his most promising and useful converts exhorts in these words Keep thyself pure Tim ITiat was his concern for a young man 19C0 years ago that he keep himself morally pure in a pagan culture noted for its laxity and perversion in matters of sex Purity is purity whether it be young Timothys age or ours Impurity of any nature is as impure in the age of Hondas and Buicks as in the age of Horses and Buggies The Christ ian message is relevant in this area 3 PIETY This word is defined as devoutness faithful ness in religion Many are the exhortations In the Christian message to fidelity on the part of Christians Be thou faithful unto death Rev 210 is ones of many examples In a world that is more and more placing the emphasis on and stressing the importance of material things and interests is the Scriptural plea for on the of professing Christians irrelevant We think not Do you not agree that the challenge of Jesus Christ Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you has a very relevant ring for our very secular and affluent society The bigoted Pharisees of Jesus day thought His message was irrelevant because it cut across some of their cherished manmade traditions In John we note a large number Of Christs wouldbe disciples turning back and walking no more with Him Why Evidently they decided that His mes sage was irrelevant when He insisted on the necessity of a vital spiritual experience with Himself as the allimportant issue Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood ye have no life in you John A rich young ruler turned sorrowfully away from Jesus when asked to give away his wealth in exchange for the gift of eternal Apparently Jesus message became Irrelevant to this aspiring young business man when Jesus touched the idol of his heart and prescribed the only way of deliverance for him Judas was drawn as by a magnet to the Master but when at the very last Judas saw that Jesus was invest ing His all in the interests of a spiritual rather than an earthly kingdom a realm that assured him Judas of no lucrative position he betrayed His Saviour Jesus mission became irrelevant Others wiser exclaimed Lord to whom shall we go hast the words of eternal life From that day until this multitudes have found the Christian message wonderfully relevant We live In an age of many and diverse sharp tempta tions and ever increasing tensions but the Christian mes sage Is relevant In times like these Any person who will the Word of God EXAMPLE the promise EXPLOIT fin the wholesome sease of the word the pro gram of a Bible believing church EXPERIMENT with sin cere prayer will soon find that Christ and His mes sage are releva toda Minister visits sister BOLTON The possibility of intercommunion
