We wish to thank all those who supported this cause by purchasing tickets NEWMARKET The prices of houses and property in northern York county are likely to continue rising in the year ahead say prominent area realtors A number of realtors contacted by The Era foresee demand for real estate strong in notwithstanding higher mortgage rates and down payments Several noted that housing is a necessity for many with the result that higher prices will not neces sarily dent demand much Speculation for country properties is on the upsurge some dealers indicated There are signs that parts of northern York County are becoming targets for landhungry specu lators most of whom are from the Metro area Jim Sloss manager of Gibson by Ltd in Newmarket and W Case of Aurora both commented on the speculative intent behind much of the buying of country land Large syndicates consisting mostly of city people are active in the Aurora area according to Mr Case East Township around the burgeoning town of Newmarket is describ ed In an article in the January edition of magazine as a hot spot for rural speculation The article which deals with land specu lation in Canada says that prices for and 23acre sites in the Newmarket area have doubled tripled and quadrupled It notes also that speculative interest is strong in the resort area immediately south of Lake YOUNG COUPLES HIT Younger couples in lower earnings brack ets are most likely to be hit by the higher cost of buying houses it is felt With rental accommodation also very scarce the pros pects of finding suitable places to live at reasonable prices do not look rosy for young married couples There are new housing developments on the planning boards some of which will ma terialize but they will be insufficient to meet the need for housing said Charles Boyd a Newmarket realtor He described as an excellent year in real estate as did all other realtors contact ed Demand has been very strong and the greatest problem has been in finding enough saleable properties A note of cautious optimism was sounded about real estate prospects in Some dealers appear uncertain about the effect on the market of higher prices and higher mortgage rates Sales in 1968 may be more difficult because of higher down payments required was the opinion of A Oliver of Nevertheless there is unanimous feeling that there will be little alleviation of the housing shortage in the coming year and this very likely means continued high de mand with a consequent upward pressure on prices Centennial Year In Review January Newmarket hits home building
