Despite discovery of many secrets of the heavens in the last few years the most fam ous star of all still remains a mystery Each Christmas season brings on a new spurt of ef fort to identify the Star of Bethlehem but the riddle has remained for years Astronomers can tell you what it was not and what it might have been But they cannot tell you for cer tain what the star was Many say it was three planets rather than a single star- Attempts to compare the account in the Bible found In Matthews second chap ter with astronomical re cords of that time bring more fog than light No astronomical body fits the Biblical description and it is impossible to pinpoint the actual dale of the birth of Jesus Christ Adding to the confusion Is the fact the ancients to comets meteors plan ets stars and even combina tions of objects simply as Stars Taking Into account errors and switches In calendar sys tems the closest scholars can come to Christs With date Is some time during the spring of the year we now call BC old do not tell of any spectacular celestial displays occurring at this time NOT Yet the Star of Bethlehem Christmas Santa Claus Jr I frightfully say Vill never bo Jolly in Santas old way Ill never believe what I saw that strange night Hut hoy believe me oh what a sight All of sudden I heard on the roof Hie scraping and pawing of nine hoofs I ran a chair and behind It I hid As I ran past it I tumbled and slid All of a sudden smoke filled the air wiped off my clothing and gave him a stare Was this the man of joy and love Jumping from his sled he left above He looked like a Twiggy Id seen in a book His mouth it was snared to give funny looks His coat it was black I could see in a flash He looked up the chimney a pulled down a sack No pipe in his mouth did he carry with ease He coughed a little and start ed to sneeze Finally I saw a tear in his eye It was so sad I started to cry I jumped up to see If he was alright I Just remembered I was a sight I ran to his side and there I did stay Until it was time to go away Santa junior I fretfully say Will be Santa in his own Utile way SHAIION Prince Charles Pub School must have been something extraordinary to spark the journey of the Wise who as and probably would not get excited over something as common as comets or met eors Since they trekked to Beth lehem from Persia or India the star must have been visible for some time long er than the visible life of a comet or meteor From time to lime a very dim star or one Invisible to the untclcscopcd eye ex plodes and the brilliant re sult attracts wide attention These supernova glitter for months therefore one would be a likely candidate for the Star of Bethlehem But there Is no record of a supernova brightening the sky In BC And these objects do not shine for just train ed eyes If one had lighted the skies over Bethlehem many people including the shepherds would have seen and recorded It According to the Bible the shepherds learned of the birth of Jesus other means COMPLEX THEORY A host of other natural explanations and a good many unnatural ones have been put forward The one that many astronomers now favor Is a rather complex theory which dates bark to the beginning of the lvth Cen tury While studying some un usual movements of Jupiter and Saturn the Ger man clan Johannes Kapler ob served a rare massing or close grouping of the three planets Excited by what hi saw Kep ler calculated the times when a similar display could have been seen One the dates was in spring of BC ONE EXPLANATION Now that more refined me thods of calculation are avail able astronomers have recon structed what took place in the sky at the time of Jesus birth in midJanuary BC Mars moved past Saturn and by Feb stood between and a little above Jupiter and The planets formed a small triangle that made a very unusual sight In the sky However it is unlikely the event was seen by everyone It occurred near the sun and would have set during the bright evening twilight The Wise Men schooled in the lore of the heavens perhaps could have predicted the grouping but since such massing of planets can only be seen at intervals of 80S years it undoubtedly would be looked upon as an omen of great significance and planetary triangle could have become known as the Star of Bethlehem But this theory does not account for everything Tradi tion says the star went be fore the Wise Men and stood over the stable If the planets did that they acted out side known astronomical prin ciples There is a nonscientific name for events outside of natural laws They are call ed miracles a l have
