ftftft Farm Report By Al Wall Agricultural Representative for York County Milk flow is down more than usual on most of our dairy farms in York this fall The change from ummer to winter feed knocks production for a loop every year but recovery seems even slower this year Late fall pasture contributes to the toss It may look just as good as summer grass but its feed value Is a lot lower With hay quality being low cows are not getting normal nutrients out of it either The result is that grain has a big gap to fill Rate of grain feeding and its nutrient content must both be high to get production up This is expensive feeding Everybody has to worry about whether it will pay or not Its a pretty safe bet that it will pay to push the good producers with grain Up to 25 lbs per day could well be a practical rate for a cow that putting out sixty or seventy pounds of milk The other side of it is that grain to cows that really arent all that interested in milking could easily be money down the drain Its often possible to raise a herds production without increasing the total grain fed but by being more generous to the good cows and quite stingy to those that arent working hard Its quite natural to think that cold miserable weather pulls milk production down But research shows that low temperatures do not affect produc tion at all until we get down to ten degrees and tower Hot weather in summer harder on a cow than our November temperatures Without some records on production a feeding programme in a dairy herd is too much like a shot in the dark Herd management it seems has to be better and better all the time to keep a herd profitable Some weighing and testing system I think will be part of that management Details on A or B plans and owner sampling are all available at our office Test Well Water To Protect Health NEWMARKET Water from wells in small urban centers and on farms should be tested periodically for purity according lo Brown Victoria County Agri cultural Representative On tario Department of Agricul ture and Food Agricultural Representatives offices in all counties provide special ster ilized bottles for taking samples Because of the many pos sible sources of pollution on the farm a well could be con taminated very quickly Properly located and con structed wells reduce the danger of contamination from all sources There are not many water supplies anywhere that are free from bacteria but only a very few of these bacteria are dangerous to health The samples of water are tested mainly for the presence of intestinal bacteria If harmful organisms are found in a water supply two temporary measures should be taken immediately Boiling or of small quan tities of water for domestic purposes can be employed These are temporary meas ures to be taken only until the source of contamination can be located removed of a water supply is relatively easy and economical Two fluid ounces of a preparation containing chlorine is added to gal- Ions of water Water in a well can also be treated this way by estimating the amount of water contained in it Several other methods for treating polluted water sup plies are used and can be had by contacting the Agricultural Representatives office in your area COOPERATIVE CONSULTATION CORNER by Bob McDonald Branch Manager Newmarket Branch GASOLINE OR DIESEL What kind or fuel should your new tractor burn That is perhaps the most difficult ques tion to answer every time we plan to buy an ex tra tractor or trade in one that has seen better days There arc three kinds of fuel used in farm tractors gasoline diesel fuel and liquid pro pane Since liquid propane tractors are still fairly rare in Ontario and since many dealers are not yet equipped lo service these engines we will compare gasoline and tractors in this column If readers are interested in the possibil ities of liquid propane engines we will discuss them in a later column Basically tractor costs can be broken down into fixed cost or overhead and operating costs as one goes down the other up You can I have your cake and eat it too Well talk a little about figures in a minute but first there are some other considerations too in the decision as to which tractor to buy pretty well centre around what kind of service is expected from the machine Cold weat her Marling is one factor Gasoline tractors gen erally start more easily than diesel although newer diesel models certainly have improved cold weather starting aids such as manifold heat ers A diesel engine by its very nature has better lugging ability under heavy loads than docs a gasoline engine hazards arc less with tractors and so is the amount of fuel evapor ation from storage tanks Now leis go back lo a look at the figures Fuel cost per hour is lower with but this is counterbalanced by a higher initial cost for the tractor and consequently a higher fixed cost per hour of use This means that unless you use the tractor a lot of hours per year the lower fuel cost may not be enough to balance out for ihe higher overhead cost Overhead costs include depreciation interest on the money invested repairs and a small amount to cover insurance and housing Calcu lations based on a large number of farm tractors come up with an annual overhead cost of 176 per cent of the purchase cost for diesel and per cent for gasoline The difference is in repair bills Not only do you nay a bigger percentage of the original cost in upkeep each year but the orig inal cost of the is higher too If you can use the a lot of hours a year and will be expecting a good deal of heavy lug ging from it lake a good look at diesel Feeder Brings Birds To Winter Garden The Era NewmarketAurora Wed November 25 One of the delights of we late fall and winter is to watch birds come to a garden feeding station There is no thing more exciting on a morning when the garden is covered with a glistening blanket of newly fallen snow than to see a cardinal or a bluejay flash a brilliant dis play of color at your bird feed er Somehow the chilly days seem less harsh and theres a springlike feeling even thought that glorious period of the year is still some months away Nevertheless thats not the only important reason for maintaining bird feeding sta tions in the garden One of the indirect benefits is the de struction of thousands of hibernating insects on the trees shrubs and evergreens in the garden Such birds seek out clusters of gypsy moth eggs globs of or coddling moths which lie dormant in the tree bark just waiting for warm weather to signal the start of their at tacks on a host of garden plants and trees During the past few chilly mornings Ive watched a brown creeper that works over a flowering crab just outside my breakfastroom window It searches out every crevice looking for hibernating in sects Every insect eaten by this busy little bird means a thousand or as much as descenders Is that wont be around to attack the flow ering crab and other parts of the garden next spring and summer Filling the bird feeders with seeds is not only thing that should be done These will only attract to a limited de gree insect eaters such as the brown creeper What the lat ter want is a high energy food that gives them the same type of nourishment they re ceive from their regular diet of insects Most people try to supple ment the seeds with suet However sometime ago the noted American horticultural- Dr Milton Carleton gave me a recipe for a winter food for insect eaters which is far better than suet both in its attractiveness to the birds and as a source of energy for them You make it by us ing two cups each of wheat ground suet and sugar mixing these with one cup of and half a cup of water Mix these ingredients to- In The Garden John in a double boiler and heat over a medium flame for 2 minutes to melt the suet then pour the mixture into greased moulds and cool Next cut into chunks place in wire racks and hang around the feeder or other parts of the garden where it can be seen from a window Theres enough grain in this mixture to attract the seed eaters as well as those that cat insects Cardinals and chickadees will eat it An extra fine mixture can be made by adding raisins or crushed nutmeats or both to the basic recipe A cup of each would not be too much to add I dont think this will make it more attractive to the birds but these are in gredients that they eat very readily One certain way of reliev ing the dally monotony of do ing dishes for many house wives Is to set up a bird feeding station where it can be seen from the kitchen win- dow latter should not be stuck out In the open with no shrubs or trees to provide shelter and safety This is particularly true in ciltcs and the suburbs where most of the natural thickets and hedge rows have been eli minated A place to get out of the wind can mean the difference between life and death of cedar wax wings or cardinals r Simcoe County
