Hash By George Haskett Haskett s NY Rangers In 53 Ice Victory Hashman had the pleasure of attending one of Joe VandenBerghs first speech therapy classes at the York Curling Club last week These are likely to become a weekly feature at the stone and broom emporium Joe Sam Art Morecroft and myself made suggestions that will revolutionize the game of curling It was all thought out in a matter of sixty seconds In move to brighten iceman Bill Ver- bakels day we decided to pebble the stones rather than the ice In order to get the proper turn it was decided only one half the stone would be pebbled Furthermore it was decided if golfers can have carts to tear up and around the course why not automatic sweepers for curlers Lets say something in the way of a wired jitterbug broom The brooms might well be fitted with a miniature radio so when a good shot is made a happy tune could be played Anyone wishing to join the VandenBergh classes can contact myself or Art Morecroft We understand class fees will be quite reasonable and can be paid on the installment basis down and per week for weeks If you dont emerge as a candidate for the NHS English lit classes your money will be refunded cheerfully President Hodges and his York Curling Club committee havent been approached regarding im plementing these revolutionary curling ideas Theres a saying a change is as good as a rest We gave York Curlers from April to Nov off think ing the rest would improve their game It has in some cases but there are still a few stone chuckers who are making the same misses they did back in March The friendly atmosphere is still much in evidence at both the York Curling Club and Newmarket Miami Greens Hashman salutes these two organi zations for their continued efforts to provide recrea tion for many citizens It is always a pleasure to drop In at either location Both the and curlers seems to know how to combine fun and recreation FUN MISSING Having fun seems to be one of the items that have disappeared from the minor hockey scene Everyone seems to be more wrapped up in winning than In playing the game It because the coaches and managers want to build a reputation for pro ducing winning hockey teams We often wonder if we shouldnt give the game back to the kids like shooting them out on the ice in goodly num bers to chase after a rubber ball or a felt puck something that wouldnt hurt anyone This true of our smallest hockey fry Shouldnt we just turn them loose on the ice to have fun If It didnt do anything else It would probably produce a better crop of skaters and stick- handlers And whoever heard of a player making the big time if he couldnt well Hockey expansion talk seems to be with us to stay Theres talk of a third NHL sixteam league to include Seattle Vancouver Quebec Atlanta etc Just about a year ago they said expansion wouldnt work The new expansion teams are doing so well against the old clubs its the main hockey topic EXPANSION AT HOME Expansion has hit down
